I need some urgent #Linux help. I ran updates on Manjaro... having forgotten about the dropping of x11 support AND nVidia dropping my graphics card's support (GTX 1070 Mobile). The result... the boot text stops at CUPS (I disable the splash. I hate the splash). I can go to tty. startplasma-wayland does work, with issues.
I don't even know where to start to fix this. If I can get my login screen, and Second Life works, I'm not picky if it's x11 or wayland right now. I can fix other things later. -

No idea if it will help or not but I figured it was worth a shot to mention it š

I can fix other things later.@hellomiakoda sounds like an issue with the login manager sddm or whatever you're using. Make sure the service is enabled and started. You could troubleshoot it with the status command. Otherwise you may be able to substitute it with something like gdm but then you'll pull in a bunch of gnome dependencies

I can fix other things later.@hellomiakoda I wish I knew more about how wayland works at a lower level than I do. I'm guessing (but it's just a guess) it could be related to systemd, xdg, and/or linux DRM. Are there open source nvidia drivers you can try?

@hazelnot I keep hitting snags as it insists it's needed by this or that. Working my way through it. Just taking out things that "NEED" the 590 driver that got installed.

I can fix other things later.@hellomiakoda I'm not sure how much i can help with this but just a thought - assuming it is a laptop, do you have the option (eg in bios/uefi) to use an integrated gpu instead of the nvidia?
If you can switch to an igpu it won't solve your problem as such, but might at least make it easier to concentrate on the x11/wayland problem first and then tackle nvidia once you've got a usable desktop again...

@ds Sadly no. This laptop was one model year PRIOR to these being able to use the integrated graphics. It's all nVidia, all the time. I was so sad to have been so close to being able to switch between them.

I can fix other things later.@hellomiakoda as others have mentioned, there may be multiple things going on, which can be different to troubleshoot. Since you mentioned the drivers are dropping support for your chipset, maybe doing something like
pacman -Q | grep nvidia
And then manually installing the version that had been working will get your GUI working again.

@ktneely It appears the driver issue is probably resolved. I had to install 580. Right now, it seems SDDM is trying to run on X, and Manjaro removed X... so no sddm. I can't get sddm going.

@jawarajabbi @jzillw @cstross This is exactly how the banking system is, even large banks, & the work of integrating or migrating those systems is frequently farmed out to consulting firms (ask me how I know). Itās all fragile, held together with tape, & breaks all the time.
Iāve been away from that world for a bit, but I think itās very likely those people would be looking at LLMs as a godsend.

Also, the entire finance industry is on a massive cocaine-style high about AI and vibe coding, and have drunk *all* the Kool-Aid, with an "Emperor's New Clothes" denial of the downsides. So it wouldn't surprise me one jot if managers at bank say "we've vibe coded all the stuff, and there's no risk because we're rockstars".
(I've worked in software Dev in investment banks and other financial institutions for the last 30 years)

In 2008/09, half the main banks in the UK were nationalized to stop them going bust and taking half the populations' mortgages and savings with them. They ended up back in private hands again a decade later.

US culture in general, but gun culture specifically. the way people venerate violence and promote it as a solution. the culture of fear among white people in particular. they think they'll be a target and need a gun at the ready to respond. it's obviously linked to white supremacy and the fear of the Other.
the culture needs to change or the violence and negligence will continue.
