If you would have said 'Should the Middle East be demilitarised?' - that would have been reasonable.

Some people expressed surprise that this topic would be under discussion; it's been one of the negotiating parameters for the US and Israel since Oslo. Even work to recognize Palestine in the US Senate uses the phrase "demilitarized" in the title of the bill.

I'm a No, But. No, I don't think that a sovereign people should be disarmed against their will; that's really a low bar for sovereignty. I also don't like the racist presumption that Palestinians are inherently violent and unable to abide by peace agreements -- that unless they are disarmed, they will wage offensive wars against their neighbours. But, I do think it's reasonable to negotiate where and how military deployments can happen, though. Negotiating a demilitarized border, for example.

A lot of commenters said that Israel should be demilitarized also or instead. I've never seen this proposed seriously, although a Google search shows that there were some utopian pacifist left Zionists in the early 1900s who proposed a demilitarized Israel/Palestine binational state. I don't know what to make of this, honestly. Sure, I guess?
