Good morning Fedi friends!
I know this is not the right place to ask for this but I'm in need of a Jiminy Cricket / voice of reason to talk me out of something I am sooo tempted to do:
1) buy a new domain name (to be fair it would be a good move to secure it, can't explain why till I do)
2) set up my own Sharkey instance with it (no need for this whatsoever except that I'm impossibly smitten with it)... to use this as a private little instance to interact with friends / contacts.
I can't get Sharkey out of my mind, help 😆

Just buy the domain name, if it’s under 20€. Set a reminder for 11 months from now to check if you still want / need it.

I suppose I want a quieter instance where I just comment on friends' / contacts' posts.
My Mastodon account can get so noisy, with 100+ mentions some days.
I just want a little quiet corner of the fediverse that's a little bit slower, if it makes sense? And Sharkey is so joyous -
@mirabilos oh I know but I'm tired of installing subdomains on my TLDs. Their DNS records are absolutely bananas. Plus I really need to get that specific TLD I have in mind...

@slothrop on IONOS it's 1 Euro only but I can't figure out if it includes domain privacy... otherwise on my usual hosting company it's 15 Euros

@leonieke yes yes I completely agree re: domains but this particular one I need to secure (independently of any Sharkey installation), so I thought: cool, I can then immediately use it for Sharkey. If it makes sense? Plus the DNS records for the TLD I own and use for self-hosting are a real headache... because of all the subdomains I created. I'd love to start with a fresh slate...

Making a Cardboard Airplane Wing
Ideally, an aircraft would be made of something reasonably strong, light, and weather resistant. Cardboard, is none of those things. But that did not stop [PeterSripol] from building an ultralight wing out of cardboard.
Firstly, he wanted to figure out the strongest orientation of the cardboard flutes for the wing spars. He decided on a mix of horizontal and vertical flutes for the wing spar, with the horizontal flutes resisting vertical deformations and the vertical flutes resisting chord wise deformations.
The main spar is made up of two long strips of these cardboard pieces, glued together with a single sheet of cardboard on the top and bottom to create a structural beam. Unfortunately, the glue had not fully dried on one of the sheets before making the spar resulting in the final spar warping. Fortunately, the first wing was always intended to be tested to destruction. The wing’s ribs are made of laser cut cardboard, with doublers on the inside providing greater surface area for hot glue and a stronger rib.
Testing revealed the aft wing spar failed around 200 lbs, approximately equivalent to a 2G wing loading with a fully weighted aircraft. Since the aft wing spar broke, for the final production wings, that spar was reinforced with an separate piece of cardboard positioned perpendicular to the spar creating more of an I beam shape.
After the lessons learned from the cardboard flute orientation tests and the first wing destruction, the two wings for the final ultralight could be built. Minor changes were made from the prototype wing. After testing one wing to 150 pounds of loading, they were skinned in butcher paper to match the esthetic of cardboard. The wings came out weighing 21.8 lbs, more then ideal, but certainly workable for a single flight ultralight aircraft.

@starsider I'm open to trying simple diagnostic suggestions later if there's anything else that comes to mind to check. That said, I've had other problems with Blender's color management in the past (the one I remember filing a bug for was the colors being quantized), and working straight in linear RGB is not exactly something I'd expect a PBR renderer to have as a well tested use case, which is why I have my expectations tempered.
