Edit: Just to be clear, I still encourage everyone to move to better platforms and delete your Discord accounts (even if there was no age verification at all). Discord isn't a privacy-respectful platform.
But this small victory means we should keep pushing for better privacy practices, everywhere.

@disorderlyf @Em0nM4stodon damn right! I left cherished communities behind, it sucks. But, like Twitter, I can’t ignore it being a racist and nazi platform. Left after Elon got it. Wish more folks I respected didn’t go back to those areas and betray their entire stance once it got rough :(
It’s sad. It is starkly relatively lonely but I have to live with myself. I can’t fathom how others can just ignore it. Anyway, agreed, lol

@Em0nM4stodon Until they explicitly say they're scrapping ID/face verification of age for everyone, I say we keep the fire under their asses going. Tell the Stoat and Matrix and Mattermost and all the other platforms that people are going to that they should use this time to prepare for the second influx that'll come in 3-6 months when Discord does the thing they still plan on doing. Those who have already swapped should keep at it. If Discord wants to die on this hill, let them.

You'd be surprised how well this kind of thing works. "Oh we'll totally put it off for now. And we'll definitely rethink the way we were going to do it and not go with *this* Palantir-connected company. Hey, maybe we won't do it! Who knows!" They'll push out something smaller and ramp it up over time until it's just as bad.
Assuming people let them of course, but... well, this keeps happening over and over, so my optimism is waning I suppose.

They do things like this whole putting it off and saying we won't go with them, etc etc to get people to calm down and kind of forget about it for a bit. It's for show.
We actually agree on that part, I'm just emphasizing the "it's for show" part of this.

They pushed it back a couple months... It's not going away. Don't celebrate just yet.

I had an account I barely used, to go into the "servers" of some projects that offer no other way to ask for help (some Minecraft mods, browser extensions, etc.).
I got an email a few days ago saying it was permanently deleted. Good riddance.
That said, I imagine Discord will lay low for a while, and try to do this again in a few months.

@oblomov I found a very small corner case where they’re useful /for me/, and admittedly of small or negative utility for the OP, when I want to use a post as the seed/context for a broader idea to my followers (where I might usually just boost my own reply) but where my comment simply isn’t useful to the OP (doesn’t answer the OP question, as an example)
In general, though, boosting my own comment in addition to the OP works better
