These people are not serious about safety. Nothing gets done. Which is why nothing grows on Masto, including its user base.

Very disappointing.

This is the negative flip side of decentralized networks. Their good sides are also their bad sides. It is a free space for all forms of harassment and hatred because there is no higher-level moderation. That's why quite a few anti-Semites end up here. So, it's just the problem of decentralized, open networks whose architecture is designed in such a way that there is no higher-level moderation.

Challenge I see, just from the outset, is that moderation by people on a specific app is only part of the challenge as there needs to be a way for site mods to collaborate & share info across federated services, & that latter aspect is beyond what any one app, stack or developer can do.

@GavinChait @Mastodon so the problem INSIDE of that challenge (lol) is also the issue of consistency. Some people are very serious about anti-racism/fascism on and off their servers, where as others are not open to zero in on abusive behaviors. I think setting the tone, then maintaining that tone across servers and users is also going to be a thing.

Part two is also difficult, keeping abusive users from evading punishment, creating new account. So. A lot to address.

@ErickaSimone @Mastodon yeah, I have some good ideas & this will be my January/February focus, but would be great to have people - like yourself - who can sanity check me. Then also, if there are emerging standards for sharing moderation data, would be good to learn what those are.
