@cassidy i used this the other day for a zine that i've made. do you know if there's any nice way to edit the template to export the pages in order (for a pdf to be read on-screen)?

You shouldn't need to edit the template. You can use the Export dialog, Page tab, and select PDF from the dropdown. You'll then be able to deselect the zine page and all the other pages will be exported into the pdf as regular pages.

I added this into 1.4, so it's not more advanced than what you've already seen. (not yet, I haven't had time, busy with the cmyk work) but this is a particular setup of pages and layers which I carefully crafted as a template. The features are there, but the interface isn't all the way where I want it to be.
