Would you rather be lucky or good?

@evan sounds like you’re developing a Napoleon complex
@thaggie I don't understand.

@evan he’s attributed “I would rather have a general who was lucky than one who was good”

@thaggie oh, good to know. "Napoleon complex" means something else!
-
@evan I think both are aren't real things, but things we convince our selves are real. And chasing lies leads to sorrow, regardless
-
@evan being good "skilled" at things tend to "breed" good luck

Thanks to everyone who replied. I'd say more lucky than good.

@evan i can work on good, on lucky, not so much

@halcy I don't think that's entirely true!
Part of being lucky is exposing yourself to a lot of opportunities, being aware of when they are paying off, and doubling down when they do. I think that's something you can practice.

@halcy another part of being lucky is being the kind of person that people go the extra mile for. A lot of that is privilege, and some of that is attitude. If you leave your hat on the table at the restaurant, a big part of whether it's behind the counter when you come back, or if it went in the dumpster as soon as you left, is how you treated the staff. "Luck" is in part how much other people want good things to happen to you.

@halcy I think another part is gratitude. You can curse your luck that you lost your hat, or feel lucky that it was there when you came back.
If you have four walls and a roof, three squares a day, good friends and family, a bit of transcendent joy every so often, that can feel incredibly lucky.
If you are always comparing and judging by what others have, you'll never feel lucky because you'll always find someone who has more or better than you.
