But these switches are awesome and I'd like to what they're called or if they're custom props. I might want to get them for an art project, a cyberdeck or who knows what.

@enriquericos The thing to bear in mind about The Three Body Problem is that, like any work of commercial art in China, the author was very mindful of what the government would allow to be sold. Hence, in it, *all* characters act out of selfish, evil or insane motivations (e.g. selling out the human race to hostile invading aliens because they would prefer humanity be extinguished to protect the environment.), and the only force for good, preventing chaos, is the government

@enriquericos @raymaccarthy I was not suggesting the switches in the photo are optical switches. There are literally thousands of different kinds of similar switches.
I'm simply saying that if you want to build a thing, optical switches are one type of switch that is available, that they are pretty cool, and that they might do what you want them to do better than mechanical switches.

I'm simply saying that if you want to build a thing, optical switches are one type of switch that is available, that they are pretty cool, and that they might do what you want them to do better than mechanical switches.

The button caps are likely custom made and affixed to modern switches, although it would not at all surprise me if they are vintage commercial pieces. There's a lot of surplus vintage electronics out there in the world, and you'd only need a small number for a television or film production.

@enriquericos The author is a fascist, and his story is a justification for fascism, and any analysis or judgement of the work ought to bear that in mind.
The sadly common, unqualified observation "I love this book/series", is an indication of how low we have sunk in our ability to understand what we are watching or reading.

The caps look real to me. I may even have very similar.
Likely they printed the legends. There are many ways of doing that. In 1970s using Letraset. Transfer film & laser printer.The only advantage of optical switches is never wearing out vs 100,000 to 10 million operations for mechanical. Or for combustible atmospheres. The only optical switches I've seen in decades of Electronics are in optical encoders (control knobs and mice wheels), but most of them are mechanical.

@tartley No, I think you might be the one who is right and I have, again, interpreted what I wanted to interpret, because this annoying quality of mine of wanting to see good in others, and then getting utterly disappointed.

@enriquericos Very cool. I love audio cassettes but they degrade fairly fast. Maybe connecting nu tech to an #analogue push button interface is the way to go/an interesting approach.

@bryan dementia would suck, but I'm hoping they'll have that figured out by the time I get there. They seem to have some pretty good leads. Shingles is strongly linked to cognitive decline, for instance, and I guess the vaccine protects against that.
