@enriquericos @raymaccarthy I was not suggesting the switches in the photo are optical switches. There are literally thousands of different kinds of similar switches.
I'm simply saying that if you want to build a thing, optical switches are one type of switch that is available, that they are pretty cool, and that they might do what you want them to do better than mechanical switches.
@enriquericos @raymaccarthy My actual educational background is in Theatre Design, and that includes prop design (which includes building custom things and making them look old and worn).
The button caps are likely custom made and affixed to modern switches, although it would not at all surprise me if they are vintage commercial pieces. There's a lot of surplus vintage electronics out there in the world, and you'd only need a small number for a television or film production.

@enriquericos Given the author's real-world high profile comments in defense of the Chinese government's "re-education" (e.g. sterilization) camps for ethnic minorities, ("Would you rather they were in the subway, committing crimes?" he said) this stance does not sit comfortably with me.

The sadly common, unqualified observation "I love this book/series", is an indication of how low we have sunk in our ability to understand what we are watching or reading.

@tartley Damn, I'm thinking about it. When I saw the Chinese version I was under the impression that he was criticizing the things you're saying he promotes.

@enriquericos You might be right, I have not watched the show, and am only assuming it is in the same spirit as the book. Perhaps they pulled a Starship Troopers on it!

The caps look real to me. I may even have very similar.
Likely they printed the legends. There are many ways of doing that. In 1970s using Letraset. Transfer film & laser printer.The only advantage of optical switches is never wearing out vs 100,000 to 10 million operations for mechanical. Or for combustible atmospheres. The only optical switches I've seen in decades of Electronics are in optical encoders (control knobs and mice wheels), but most of them are mechanical.

@tartley No, I think you might be the one who is right and I have, again, interpreted what I wanted to interpret, because this annoying quality of mine of wanting to see good in others, and then getting utterly disappointed.

@tartley I shouldn't say others, maybe saying works of fiction would be more accurate.

@robertsmith I don't miss the degrading audio, or image getting darker on VHS tapes, but I do miss buttons and knobs. I bet that there are lots of Raspberry projects that combine the best of both worlds.
And I didn't know about ESP32, I'll look into it, thank you.

@enriquericos esp32s are kind of like ardunino' on steroids. often esp32s are bundled with a lora rx/tx radio clipsets for use as nodes in meshtastic and meshcore.
Also options for tf storage, touch screens, wifi and ethernet.
And cheap! Fun stuff.

Today is my birthday. Ever since I was young, starting about 5 years old from what I can recall, my internal definition for what "old" was, was 60 years. If they were 50, 40, 30, 18.. they were not “old people."
Today I turned 60 and this is really the first age-based change in perception of myself. I feel like an old person.
(BTW: I also think of myself as more liberal than ever, but self perceptions blind us to our own biases.)
