Question for fellow BSD lovers.

  • Question for fellow BSD lovers. I have an old Synology 2-bay NAS which is getting really slow, basically I use it only as a syncthing tank at the moment as it cannot handle my google photos exports, let alone video streams.

With the incoming pre-holiday season, I’m starting to look at a new NAS to get with some Black Friday promotion.

I do not have big requirements:
    1. Low power consumption: I live in Germany and electricity ain’t cheap
    2. 2-bay is enough: I have less than 1TB of data anyway
    3. (Wishful) TrueNAS/FreeBSD support: I would like to install my OS without breaking the warranty or hacks
    4. WebUI not required: it’s a nice to have, but I’m a terminal user anyway

Related: on the synology I use their proprietary CloudSync to backup my google drive and OneDrive. Any FOSS alternative? I only know of rclone.

Ah, lastly, am I stuck with google takeout to backup my Google Photos? Or is there a more unixy way to backup those files?

    Thank you 🙏

  • But with all that said, if there's *anywhere* that there's a market for a hack-it-yourself laptop that's highly configurable, it's the fediverse!

And the original point of this thread wasn't "this is the best value for the price point". That's not an argument I'm making.

The point I argued is that we *need* hackable hardware in order to keep participatory computing alive, and MNT's offerings are the best bet we have.

And I fully, fully believe that much is true.

  • Overall, the MNT Pocket Reform is just over 1k EUR. Which is what many laptops go for. Certainly if you go looking for cheaper options, you will find them though.

But it is an expense. And an even bigger expense from the MNT offerings: time, hack energy, and patience. This is the biggest thing I'd warn about: you have to be willing to fiddle with the thing and take part in the community. MNT's offerings are getting better and better, but we're still at early adopter period.
