Yesterday I've tried #FreeBSD on a decent laptop again.
I prefer Gnome/GDM over Plasma so just went by the handbook tutorial. Based on my findings, GDM is broken for 6 months on #FreeBSD and nobody cares, despite the budget of $750,000 allocated in Q4 2025 to the "Laptop Support and Usability Improvements Project".
UPDATE: KDE has been voted FBSD community favourite.
I will try to find a fix for GDM next week. This post is not quite a rant but more like a bookmark:

OpenBSD is made by a far far smaller team of developer. Entering this team by far more demanding. This positively shows in the quality of the release. Yet we must acknowledge that Debian distributues a lot more packages. I won't be surprised discovering the ratio is 2 orders of magnitude

Please do note that not only video streaming uses Widevine DRM, but audio / music streaming tends to use it too.
I personally greatly prefer media without DRM. Eg, I tend to get my music albums from Bandcamp - especially on their Friday specials where 100% goes to the artist.

#OpenBSD gains (open) Widevine DRM support on Chromium. This will fix compatibility with a large number of streaming services.
Please do note that Widevine has three security levels. Platforms can dictate what level they require. For instance, Netflix only allows SD (480p) playback at L3 and limits 4K to L1.
L1 requires secure boot, a signed and approved kernel, etc. This is not going to happen. Not on the BSDs, not on Linux.
Have yet to experiment with it - I presume it will default to L2. That is 720p playback on Netflix, if I am not mistaken.
