It seems the time has come, huh. Is anyone looking for a senior SRE with deep Linux expertise and experience with infrastructure at massive scales (ex-Meta, ex-Apple)? UK, remote (happy to visit the office anywhere in the UK every month or so). I prefer working on the automation, CI/CD, load testing, or low level debugging. However, I will not work on anything related to generative AI.

You might want to reach out to formula one teams that need to use rather old tech to keep their historic early 90s cars running. I read Williams has someone who buys up specific models of solid state drives from 1991/92 for their 1992 car to keep it going at heritage events.

@nina_kali_nina I have this ongoing fantasy that one day I'll start like "Old Crone Tech" and consult for companies that have software or hardware from ye olden times and help them move it.
Decompiling old programs, extending dosbox/etc to deal with weird peripherals, write modern drivers for old peripherals, things like that.
You'd think that there's a market for that kind of thing? But how would you even start...
The branch is called banks.
We talk Unix on mainframe and Oracle and COBOL and Java.

In addition to that, backwards compatibility is limited. Newer versions of Android complain very loudly if you try to install apps written for older versions, and in some cases refuse to proceed altogether. This is obviously compounded by potential binary incompatibility due to varying hardware architecture for programs that include a native component, but for the most part it's at the OS level.

Anyway, the experience with setting up the new phone has really amplified my deep hatred for Android.
First of all, it's basically impossible to make an actual backup of the system on stock Android, to be restored on the same or another phone at a later stage.
Android will allow you to migrate data and apps, but only if they were “official” ones. Anything that was side loaded or installed from a different store is out.
