  • Hey Fedi,
    elizafox@social.treehouse.systemsundefined elizafox@social.treehouse.systems

    Hey Fedi,

if you would like hardware of any kind designed or built I will happily do so. I also reverse engineer existing hardware (so I can make new boards or basic housings of things you can’t replace).

I do everything from firmware up to the PCBs and even the external hardware.

    My rates:

Estimate: free for most small projects, if it requires more than a few hours of work just to provide an estimate it will be billed at $25/hr. That shouldn’t be required for most projects unless it’s very complex.

Simple circuits (two layers + a couple components like an MCU, connector, and a few passives): $150.

Complex boards: $75/hr for schematic and layout. Will negotiate.

Reverse engineering: $100/hr because it is extremely tedious and time-consuming.

PCB assembly: $30/hr + PCB and stencil cost (or you send PCBs and stencils to me). I’ll use your provider of choice. Note you must provide your own stencils and I can’t do BGA or concave ICs because I lack a reflow oven.

Housings: I’m not super amazing with CAD, but we can negotiate a rate. I can 3D print with FDM and soon resin (small things only on resin).

Product assembly: we can negotiate a rate. I might do it for free depending on what else you’re doing.

Firmware: yes I also do this, I charge $75/hr, will negotiate.

Note: more complex projects may require additional costs, to cover my time and hassle. If additional hardware beyond my oscope + logic analyser + multimeter + bench supply + function generator etc. is required (especially one-off hardware I can’t use on other projects) there will be a charge for that for the cost of the hardware. I am upfront about additional costs in the estimate provided they aren’t some surprise thing you sprung on me with a last-minute big change order. I will also tell you if I am going to charge for an estimate either upfront or say “this is getting a bit long-winded, I’m going to start charging in the next hour.”

Change orders will be billed based on the stage of the process.

I use signal. Sadly. Quietly. Because its encryption is actually state of the art.

Matrix still doesn’t have its shit together and given it is an inherently brittle protocol with an even more brittle flagship server implementation, I’m not holding my breath.

Seattle is unfortunately the kind of place that has no money to fund 24/7 train service or train service that is comprehensive in anything but the one line that goes through Seattle (and the soon to open one on the same tracks that goes to Microsoft... yes, really), but they got plenty of money for CCTV cameras that they pinkie promise aren't using AI facial recognition.

If y'all ever wanna move here it is a beautiful place full of loads and loads of systemic problems, a socially progressive government with HEAVY economic conservatism so they're ALWAYS broke and everything is ALWAYS falling apart or underfunded or just plain "we tried" energy, it's expensive as fuck, SLU is a den of tech bros now, and even half the queers in Capitol Hill look like they got tech money now.

Still love it here, still don't really regret moving here.

    *load groaning sound*

I think I overengineered my USB power supply board because I was like "hey INA238 that's shiny that's cool it'll be neat to have a power monitor on it"

But then I realised "it's fucking USB, what is a user going to do with this information, look at it once, go 'huh cool', then never touch it again? Or ignore it when it says the power supply is bad... which the SPLYGD pin on the eFuse I have in here can do *just fine*..."

Oh yes btw in the intervening god knows how long since I was last on Fedi!

I got diagnosed with lupus. I finally figured out what the fuck is wrong with me. It wasn't... the news I wanted, but I'm glad I know now? It explains the weird face rashes, the weird skin issues, the weird joint issues, the weird circulation issues (Raynaud's-like stuff often comes with lupus), the lung issues, the brain fog I had *before* COVID, the literally everything.

    Open-source software in a nutshell:

"This is great! But it kicks me in the groin every time I use it. I really, really don't want to be kicked in the groin by it all the time."

    Responses:

"There is a workaround, but it punches you in the neck instead of the groin, then throws sand in your eye."

"Have you learned to like being kicked in the groin?"

"The developers specifically made it so it would kick you in the groin each time. This is because it is more powerful this way."

"There was a GSoC project to make it not kick you in the groin, but it stalled out because the developer lost interest after the project ended and it was never merged."

"Use this weird fork, but it punches you in the nose instead. And it crashes each time you use it."

"Why wouldn't you wanna be kicked in the groin?"

"It's free, what do you expect?"

"Well, [closed-source competitor] kicks you in the ass instead!"

"Patches to stop the groin kicking welcome."

  • I will elaborate a bit more.
    elizafox@social.treehouse.systemsundefined elizafox@social.treehouse.systems

I don't wanna give it all away because I'm really worried someone will take my idea and I'm actually trying to like, sell this eventually (because as much as I love open ecosystems I also love being able to eat and not having my idea taken by someone else with a team), but I will show a little bit of what I'm doing as I do it. Once I have a demo and I'm ready to launch, I'll be publishing everything. I have a couple PCBs routed, I'm designing an enclosure (if you tried, you could go find what I'm doing in OnShape with that because OH MY FUCKING GOD I CANNOT FUCKING TOLERATE FREECAD), I'm gonna try to make a demo soonish to show y'all what I'm really doing.
