And I certainly don't want AI to make any decisions for me or about me.

We need SO much more diversity in tech!

There seems to be a tendency to just pit projects against each other (or buy each other) until we only get 2 options in the end. This is horrible for consumer choices, for security, for privacy, for resilience, and just leads to more enshitification everywhere once people are locked in systems without viable alternatives.

We need much more options, everywhere.
Celebrate and encourage diversity.
In tech, and everywhere else.

Global Encryption Day! 🔒🎉

This is a good time to remember that encryption is essential to online security and digital privacy.

Despite some governments pushing hard to weaken it, we must remind them that we all need encryption, and especially end-to-end encryption, to stay safe online 💚

Privacy is a human right
and end-to-end encryption is one of the best tool we have to enforce that right.

If you liked a product or piece of software, and it becomes worse, changes the conditions, adds spying functions, you can change your mind and stop trusting and using it.

You should always re-adjust your judgment when receiving new information.

This is applicable to products, platforms, companies, political parties, and people.

If every country starts requiring that people provide official ID in order to "verify their age" to use social media, there will be no way to use any social media without associating the account with a legal identity.

This is horrible for democracy,
and should terrify everyone.

It doesn't matter if platforms use third-parties or not. It doesn't matter if they use some special encrypted code, the result is the same. This gatekeeps open discussions and government criticisms free from reprisals.

This is bad.
This is China "free-speech" bad.

There will be some negative consequences and some efforts required to leave certain platforms in protest, to stop using AI tools, and to participate in movements opposing injustices. Yes. It does come at a cost.

But many forget that the cost of complying obediently, the cost of doing nothing, the cost of passivity will be much worse in the end.

It's exhausting, I know.
It's inconvenient, I know.
It's time-consuming, I know.
But doing nothing is so much worse.

It seems to go against so many laws, and I guess because there's the words "AI" and "smart" in it, nobody cares? I think we should bring this to the attention of our data protection authorities. We should get Ray-Ban banned!

Canada Post, hospitals, and schools aren't (or shouldn't be) private businesses, they are public services. They don't need to make profits or break even, and they should be supported by public funding.

However, oil, gas, and AI companies are private for-profit businesses. They shouldn't receive any public funding.

I know there's a general "cause fatigue" with the current state of the world, and I feel it too.

But in my years working in privacy,
I don't think I've seen anything as terrifying as this European Chat Control proposal. And I'm not even European.

Everyone needs to pay
much more attention and be much more worried and outraged about this.

This proposal is the most dystopian glimpse into a horrible authoritarian future I have seen so far in the West.

It looks dismal, but we can still stop it
if we all work TOGETHER NOW ✊

There isn't much time left though,
so don't put it to next week.

Democracy dies in silence.
