The more and more old servers I see close, the more intolerable it is that Mastodon still doesn't offer a way to migrate data like posts to new accounts.@misty it would still be better than a total loss, but still catastrophically incomplete.
I can envision this being fixable with some kind of “object move” that servers recognize so that they can edit the in-reply-to etc to keep threads intact, even though plain URLs inside would still be broken.
Or maybe we need some other kind of “global derefernceable IDs” for the objects? Do the FEPs for nomadic identities support something like that?

The more and more old servers I see close, the more intolerable it is that Mastodon still doesn't offer a way to migrate data like posts to new accounts.@misty I've been thinking about this since my first server change, and what I realized is that the biggest obstacle to this isn't even Mastodon's lack of support for it, but a huge limitation in the ActivityPub protocol itself: objects IDs must be “a publicly dereferenceable URIs [...] with their authority belonging to that of the originating server”. So even if the content would be copied over, all threads and references would still become invalid 8-(

Seriously. The problem I have with Quoots is the same problem I have with Boosts@afreytes this is one of those things that would be trivially solved if we could customize the way our timeline was managed. For example, if we could collect all boosts and quoots of the same original post, or even, for what it's worth, all the posts linking to the same external resource (regardless of whether it's an ActivityPub object or not).

Friend on Twitter is contemplating the idea of setting criminal punishment severity based on how likely you are to be a repeat offender@Paradox the question you should be asking is: if you can prove you were tricked into etc, what will your sentence be now?
(Depends on the judicial system, but for example fraud will generally require intent, and if you can prove you were tricked, then there was no intent from you and it won't be fraud.)My point is that before arguing how the system should behave, it would be better to be more informed about (1) how it's already supposed to work and (2) when it doesn't, why?

Octahedral impostors wip: set up the textures & render passes, made them render test albedo, normal & depth maps with a fixed hard-coded projection, almost ready to generate actual atlases with proper projections -
Friend on Twitter is contemplating the idea of setting criminal punishment severity based on how likely you are to be a repeat offender@Paradox crimes committed under duress or necessity (and more in general “mitigating circumstances”) will already levy a reduced sentence/punishment. Ditto for first-time offense. And recidivism is already punished more harshly. So what exactly is your friend on Twitter talking about, given that they apparently don't know what they're talking about?

My wife mentioned a news story referencing the Notwithstanding Clause and how Canadian law is frustrating because on its surface it looks like US law (which she's trained in) but works differently in ways she doesn't (yet) understandbest enjoyed with the accompanying dance for peak 70s Italian television

I wish more people would understand that different people use their computers for different things.@dominikg @dotstdy this only works up to a certain extent if the changes don't get upstreamed and/or the modified version doesn't get enough of a userbase to warrant its maintenance, because over time (and in certain areas that's relatively quickly) it will lapse and become incompatible with the rest of the ecosystem.
