What an announcement from #Telegram owner Pawel Durov! To provide just a few critical notes, he
- makes believe he is just a commoner, and not the billionaire owner of one of the largest message, media and metadata *cleartext* databases on earth
- skips over Global Warming
- refers to "fathers and forefathers" of the Internet ... apparently never heard of Radia Perlman, Margaret Hamilton or Ada Lovelace?
- conveniently excludes Russia and its authoritarian politics from his critique
etc.

He addressed these complaints years ago, the summary is:
Social networks are as useful as how many people use them. So they need to attract people. Technically it is very difficult to provide features that attract people by using e2ee, decentralization, donations etc.
He thinks he can be an enlightened patron and being able to protect himself from power. He has the money to do this particular attempt.

And let's admit Telegram is not the reason things like Matrix, Delta, XMPP are not more popular. It's just that it is nearly impossible to make them as popular as Telegram because of what people are today.
Durov just sent a valuable message to 1+ billion of people today and it is not appreciated because he didn't the same with e2ee, decentralization, DEI terminology and without being a billionaire.

@alxlg @adbenitez end-to-end encryption and decentralization are at the very core of achieving resilient and private Internet messaging. Good intents and big ethical claims are not sufficient. Relying on Durov and all of Telegram's sysadmins to never ever do database queries and hand over data to some high bidder is a tenuous assumption.
We need architectures, practises and licenses that grant a right to exit for users and devs, to materially prevent enshittification and selling out users.

@34 @spettacoli in veritร io penso che Ghali (che ha comprato una barca per salvare i migranti nel Mediterraneo!) e Roger Waters abbiano diritto di essere incoerenti. Come lo sono io che per anni ho venduto spettacoli alle peggio amministrazioni. Quello che m'infastidisce รจ ergersi ad "arbitro in terra del bene e del male"
