Happy International Women's Day!
Women* (for my non-scientific polling purposes, this is everyone who does not identify as a man): how many men have mansplained to you something you're an expert on in the last 24 hours? (I just blocked a ridiculous mansplaining dude, so yeah.)

@sundogplanets zero only because I'm working from home with my husband, and avoiding socials for the most part. Though an online dude did try to tell me that 'socialism=communism' and I just couldn't be bothered, because what's the point? (Expertise: degrees in arts, psychology and education; 10 years teaching sociology & education. )

@sundogplanets None, but it was also a weekend, my big social media post from late last week (which collected plenty of mansplaining) had run its course, and I didnโt see a single man in the previous 24 hour time period. So this was very much avoiding-mansplaining-by-avoiding-men.

@sundogplanets only one, but I also only talked to three in the last 24hrs...

@sundogplanets can't help thinking that the term mansplaining is sexist.

@sundogplanets happily today was a Sunday so the only men I interacted with were my husband and one of my best friends
both of whom are too smart to try to school me
well ok there was one guy at the grocery store, but I wouldn't call smelling his strong personal odor an interaction as such
memorable, tho
he must smoke pretty heavily

@sundogplanets Just perma-muted one of your first five responders. Sigh.

Just cut them off. No need to spare feelings.

@sundogplanets FTR, I'm a 50+ white man and and expert in my field and I regularly get mansplained to.

Iโm not eligible to reply to the poll, but in my last job I was on the Diversity and Inclusion committee, which was predominantly female. I once sat through a meeting where a (male) senior HR rep spend 15 minutes mansplaining inclusive meeting behaviour and no one was able to cut him off. So Iโm quite surprised that the results so far are so low.

@sundogplanets
Weekend which I spent with my family -
@sundogplanets can't help thinking that the term mansplaining is sexist.
@weta @sundogplanets well, it is a symptom mostly of my gender, so it's acceptable as a gendered term. I also like "manologue" and "corectile dysfunction"

@sundogplanets where does a manplainer get their drink from?
A well, actually. -

@Offbeatmammal @weta @sundogplanets
I just say besserwisser, with the assumption that the speaker only thinks they know better, not that they actually do.
Though I do admit that know-it-all doesn't necessarily relate to interest on unprompted speaking.

@Offbeatmammal it's a sexist generalisation it's offensive in the same way as 'dumb blond' or ' nagging' or 'hysterical' for instance. describing a real behavior pattern doesn't require blaming an entire gender for it I think

@david_chisnall @sundogplanets I think many women avoid generic men (I e. Non relatives, friends etc.) if they possibly can especially out of work.

@sundogplanets I'm so happy I'm no expert on anything. That's why I didn't vote.

@sundogplanets For once, it wasn't a man this time.

Thank-you!
Allow me an addendum: sometimes it's worth asking WHY someone is doing something, and not just ARE they doing it.
Besserwissering (and mansplaining, in case there's a difference) is characterized by hierarchial powerplay: keeping the stage (over more qualified) shows societal capital.
At the same time we must remember that (needless-)monologuing is also an autistic way of seeking connection. I get the impression that this is often forgotten.
