Incredible. “US has subpoenaed all tech companies to hand over all messages with EU officials that enforce the DSA” https://judiciary.house.gov/media/press-releases/chairman-jordan-probes-eu-bureaucrats-hiding-efforts-censor-american-speech
@marleenstikker Slightly confusing, as using secure communications between EU officials makes sense, but this subpoena is about communications with EU officials.
Makes no sense to use secure communications there.
The fact these companies cannot be trusted to keep anything handled by them secret, is another problem all together.

@marleenstikker the silver lining is that with the next US elections being in the remote future, EU politicos can no longer revert to their habitual stupor, in the hope of some "reversion to normal" that will relieve them of actually having to act with intelligence and purpose.
A gross strategic miscalculation around all things digital that spans decades is now extracting its toll. Nothing to do but build a real alternative, whatever it takes.

@marleenstikker Although it prompted a sharp intake of breath when I read the article this action is not surprising in the context of the classified documents that Edward Snowden made public in 2013.
What is surprising is that the US authorities have made these requests public as the Snowden leaks showed that such demands for information were handled by secret courts.
It seems to me that this is designed to make the EU in general and individual EU officials feel as uncomfortable as possible.

@the_wub Exactly what I was thinking. Why make a press release about this? It doesn't make any sense.

@marleenstikker what shocks me is that they qualify the European Commission and European member states as "foreign censors" (WHAAAAAT)?
@_elena @marleenstikker These guys are very big on DARVO as theatre to their base.

@avuko @marleenstikker But this is a press release, so either it suggests the technology companies were subpoenaed to produce the internal communications sbetween EU officials (which would be scandalous, and if things like this are going on, it would be bizarre to put it in a press release), or it is to paint a propagandistic picture of EU officials trying to hide ?

@marleenstikker as a European, I'd love to see this level of transparency. But I don't love what orange man will probably do with the information.
