So I've been playing with Japanese on Duolingo for 600+ days. I really like it.

As a Dane it is fascinating and bewildering. One of the things that is the most confusing to me when reading it, is how kanji are not the same even when they look it. What do i mean?

水 - mizu - means water okay.

水曜日 - hrm, oh yeah i know that kanji, so the word starts with mizu-something right?

Wrong obviously its: *sui*youbi

(Means Wednesday btw)

feels like there's no system to this at times

I've spent 5-6 years studying it.
Now it's been a while I've stopped and almost forgot everything.
But a possible solution is not to study kanjis in isolation but in context, to learn their pronunciation matching the rest of the sentence.

- 水を飲む --> mizu
- 今日は水曜日 --> sui

And so on.
My son (almost 10yo) is studying it like that, on his Japanese school books.
And he already knows more than 200 kanjis...
