@TazPoltorak @Bfordham some toy machines cheat by only being able to make a chain stitch instead of the lockstitch used by modern¹ machines: those aren't really sewing machines, they can't be used to follow instructions designed for sewing machines and I'd recommend staying away from them even as a “starting” machine, because they really aren't one.the main issue being that the chain stitch unravels, and using it to make functional garments will require a lot more handsewing and different techniques that those used today.as the first sewing machine ever built, they were time saver when sewing meters and meters of ruffles on a 1850s dress, when you were used to sew 1840s dresses by hand, but really, sewing machine technology has moved on :)¹ i.e. since the second half of the 19th century :D

#AskFedi1. Where is a reputable place with good privacy/security that you can upload a video, and share the link privately for other people to watch back?2. What nowadays would be a good price per GB for that kind of storage, once you're past whatever limit they set on the amount you can store for free?(I'm trying to work out whether a particular deal is good value or not, and what might be the alternatives.)Thanks for any info!#storage #video #cloud

@mayintoronto a house.I was lucky enough to get a mortgage years ago when such things were feasible. When we were able, we overpaid, reducing the capital, and therefore both the interest and the monthly payments. Our current monthly repayment is a small fraction of what we'd be paying to rent, and we're also on a deal vastly better than any to be had now.Things have changed a lot since we first bought - we have two neurodiverse kids, I'm physically disabled, and the world has descended into omnicrisis. The headroom we have from our housing costs being so low is making a huge difference to our daily lives.
