#solarpunk@markmetz i remember this tech from ~20 years ago at some very hippy forum, someone was making insulation sheets with mycelium. Great if theyve found niche that can work with it.

#solarpunk@markmetz The #goodNews: It's no more 'only' #solarpunk, it's already industry (the video seems to be quite old). Here in France, we have companies producing #packages from #mycelium, hemp, algues, or plant waste.
Also in other EU countries like Belgium: https://www.permafungi.be/en - which is cofounded by the EU!The French anti-plastic laws have accelerated these developments.

@markmetz there was a documentary about this on BBC2 like 15 years ago and it looked like such a great development. I never heard anything of it again. I hope it's finally taking off.
@SilverArrows Those packages are already in our shops. There are several European companies producing them. (You can find some in the comments here).

@c_salem Such projects are already funded by the EU, e.g. the Belgian company Permafungi.
And the packages are in the shops. In France e.g. https://www.embelium.fr/ - and outside the EU you have Mushroom Packaging UK. -

@admin There's a lot of info in the internet! You can also ask the producers for which case the packages are used.
#Mycelium is one of the foundations of life. It permeates the entire soil of earth. Most food plants cannot survive at all without symbiosis with mycorrhiza (= mycelium firmly connected to their roots). Every good compost has plenty of mycelium.

@b0rk The origin of writing https://dustycloud.org/blog/a-letter-from-2016-to-2026/ is my bitterness that a decade ago, we heard a lot of promises that "don't worry, we'll automate away the boring stuff, you can focus on being creative!" and now people seem resigned to "well, all that creative stuff, I don't do it anymore"
Honestly, for me, not doing the creative stuff is giving up on the things that bring me the most happiness in life. And we know that what LLMs are bad at right now is anything that is genuinely new... they're very good at doing things that have been done before.
So, celebrate those who continue to be creative, I think. Because ultimately, even the vibecoders / vibeartists rely on their work to advance things.
But it's depressing to me to see the promises of what life would be like vs what it's now like.

@b0rk Someone else who got value from it and seems to be using it responsibly by training on their own library, reportedly avoiding tech debt dependency, is @adafruit . Who unfortunately got more shit unloaded onto them than Biff in his open top car in Back To The Future.
