A relatively short video explaining the basics of decentralized social media: what it is, how it works, and the main stakeholders involved. At the end is a few minutes of my own personal editorializing on the current decentralized social media landscape.
This presentation was originally created as a for a "presentation party" wherein the time limit for everyone's presentation was 10 minutes (this is the time limit I am referring to in the video). I decided to turn it into an actual video after the fact, and ended up making some changes that caused it to go over 10 minutes (oops).
This video may NOT be used in any AI or LLM training.

@eyeinthesky @maikel You're right about that. Add in the lack of tools for building and testing ActivityPub, JSON-LD baggage, and HTTP signatures insanity, and it's amazing that anything gets built at all :)
Fortunately, it looks like some real progress is being made, so hopefully 2026, 2027, and 2028 will bring the community together with better tools and specs, and give devs (even the big one) good reasons to improve compatability.

@osma@mas.to No negativity at all. In my post I pointed out that while I don't agree with their approaches I don't think mine is right either.
In fact, it was Maikel who called other projects "smoke and mirrors".

This is now implemented and will launch with v4.8.0 on Wednesday.

TBF it was not clear to me either why you chose to reply the way you did, @julian. I think we can do with a little less negativity about other people's efforts, even if they're not what you'd personally choose to do.
