  • An ocean scientist I know lost her federal government job this week. Canada should be scooping up American scientists left and right, not firing our scientists!! She works on carbon observation in the ocean, which is, you know, really fucking important. Everyone else who works on it on the west coast also got cut

Maybe a good time to reach out to your MPs and ask how the fuck we're supposed to be a world leader or whatever if federal scientists are fired and univerities are all drowning?

  • @boris @dmian @scottjenson this is something that was designed into ActivityPub and has largely been ignored. We're doing a lot of work on it at the W3C SocialCG group.

  • Silica Gel Makes For Better 3D Prints

It’s possible to improve your 3D prints in all kinds of ways. You can tune your printer’s motion, buy better filament, or tinker endlessly with any number of slicer settings. Or, as [Dirt-E-Bikes] explains, you could grab yourself some silica gel.

If you’re unfamiliar with silica gel, it’s that stuff that comes in the “DO NOT EAT” packet when you buy a new pair of shoes. It’s key feature is that it’s hygroscopic—which means it likes to suck up moisture from the atmosphere. When it comes to 3D printing, this is a highly useful property—specifically because it can help keep filament dry. Over time, plastic filament tends to pick up some moisture on its own from the atmosphere, and this tends to interfere with print quality. This can be avoided by storing filament in a sealed or semi-seaeled environment with silica gel. The gel will tend to suck up most of the moisture from the air in the sealed container, helping to keep the filament drier.

[Dirt-E-Bikes] does a great job of explaining how best to integrate silica gel with your filament spools and automatic material changer (if you have one). He also explains the value of color changing silica gel which indicates when the material is saturated with water, as well as how to dry it out for reuse. You can even combine some of the color changing beads with the more common plain white beads recycled from your shoe boxes, since you only need a few colored beads to get an idea of the water content.

We’ve explored other filament drying solutions before, too. Video after the break.

Da adesso in poi cercherò di usare sempre un hashtag in italiano e uno in lombardo. Faccio ancora fatica a scriverlo e a parlarlo. Ma almeno così iniziano ad apparire nella dashboard di moderazione.#linguaitaliana #lengualombarda #PruvinciaDeVares #ProvinciaDiVarese

Summer/Autumn 2025: Little coding, but lots of socializing and planningAt the first October weekend I (@linos) was attending the Berlin FediDay 2025. It was a meetup of the Berlin and German community, developers of Fediverse applications, and representatives of German speaking media institutions. It was great to see old friends again and meet some online contacts for the first time. We were discussing the future and the role of the Fediverse, which was super motivating. #FediDayTwo weeks later, I travelled to Sofia, Bulgaria, to attend this year’s OpenFest, give a talk and lead a workshop on how the Fediverse can help announce and discover events. Unfortunately, the talk didn’t attract much attention, as LLMs are currently drawing more of an audience. But the discussions with those in attendance were very interesting. The workshop was mainly about trying out #Gancio, #WordPress and #Mastodon and learning about the possibilities for local communities by trying out the applications themselves. I simply provided real test instances, created a list of tasks, including minor pitfalls, and, of course, answered all the questions that came up – and there were quite a few! And a big thank you to the crew and the organizing team, who were so friendly and simply wonderful throughout. #OpenFestYesterday, I had an awesome online meeting with the incredibly cool folks behind LAUTI, a free and open-source software for hosting small event calendars. #LAUTI is aimed at small and medium-sized communities and has a big focus on social, cultural and activist stuff. The instance for the Stuttgart area, run by the collective that develops it (@klasse_methode@chaos.social), can be found at https://einftopf.info. The developers are in the process of exploring the potential of #ActivityPub and the #Fediverse. I’m very excited and think this could be really great! In case you’ve been wondering: I see LAUTI kind of in between #Mobilizon and #Gancio. In my opinion, it would not be a competitor to them, but it could be a great addition to the Fediverse by filling this gap.I will be at the #SFSCON in Bolzano, Italy, in two weeks. There will be a whole afternoon focusing on the Fediverse! So in case you’re there you’re invited to join my short talk about Interoperability of Events in the Fediverse: status quo and vision. Or you’re welcome any time to say hello and let’s have a chat. After that, it’s time to sit down and get back to programming. But it’s very important to me to continually evaluate and understand what the priorities are, and to remind myself why it’s so important that we all continue our work in this area.#ActivityPub #FediDay #Fediverse #Gancio #Lauti #Mastodon #Mobilizon #OpenFest #SFSCON #WordPress

@WeirdWriter @rysiek These two paragraphs struck me in particular:> That’s in stark contrast to, say, Google+, which despite corporate backing, incomparably larger budget, and being pushed down people’s throats through forced integration with YouTube, survived mere seven years, nine months, and a week.Because unfortunately Google probably doesn't see that as a problem. Or even as the Fedi winning. For them, longetivity doesn't matter, but peak user count.> And once it shut down, it shut down. A social network of millions just blipped out of existence one day. All those moments – lost in time, like tears in rain. This, too, for them is a good thing. No-one else can profit from "their" data. This just makes it so crystal clear how the big one's interests aren't aligned with ours. Google+ wasn't really failing in their book, it had served its purpose and then ceased to do so. To us, this is loss. To Google this is just business.
