A little while ago, I read an article from a local online paper. It was blatantly and totally written by AI, and it was obvious.
It contained a rather marked inconsistency, but I wasn't surprised: some human journalists do this too. I know well how they operate: where they don't know something, they invent. I saw it in person as a teenager.
Under the article, one of the people involved left a comment clarifying almost everything, saying, "it seems you're describing a different story".
The editorial team replied, talking in circles (with another message produced entirely by AI) and remarking that yes, some details might be imprecise as the story was "reconstructed".When they say AI will steal jobs, perhaps they're not wrong. If you're a journalist and you do something like this, you probably aren't worthy of that job.

@stefano I’m starting to see a lot of odd errors in news stories: factual, grammar and spelling, that makes me wonder how much of it is written by AI and then not checked for errors. And I’m also wondering how often I read and absorb information from a news article that should be correct, but isn’t.

@DawnBlackbirds if you see grammar and spelling, it probably isn't AI - but factual...yes, it may be

@stefano Possibly not, but I am seeing spelling and grammar issues far too often, and it’s only started in the last year or so. Can’t help feeling all three are connected. I’ve read something in the last couple of days about spellcheck going weird because it’s now done by AI, so it is possible.

@stefano the BBC of all institutions seems to be heavily written by CBS (USA 'partner') and/or AI. Odd terms, out of context terms/words and other weirdness in many articles.

@cowlet @scruss and yes this does lead to fuzzy areas such as amateurs playing with professional rules or in tournaments of different officiality, or at least to some varying degree of playfulness: the more personally one plays, the less of a game it is.

@cowlet @scruss I'm perfectly fine with professional anything not falling into the “game” category. By name already, it is being done as a profession, not to entertain the player, even if the player does enjoy the activity, and yes, even if the rules of the subject are exactly the same (which in cases are not, as you need additional implements e.g. to track time, or judges to validate moves, etc).
