@aeva Let us know if you find a good one! I've never been able to make one stick for me, but perhaps that's just a sign of insufficient dedication.

@klara "organic maps" seems nice so far. search is a little funky though

@demofox it's allegedly faster. I'm expecting most of the gain to be in GPU perf.
@demofox tbh it feels about the same. discord runs less shit, but otherwise I can't really tell

my new phone is bigger than my old phone and is a subset of the old phone's features and capabilities. moore's law is dead

i ordered some dongles so I can listen to music on the new phone (or be able to hear anything at all in phone calls womp womp), but honestly i'm giving serious consideration to getting a dedicated mp3 player

@aeva @klara I also had good experiences with Organic Maps. I find it very nice for walking directions and searching for public amenities like drinking fountains, fitness stations and public bathrooms near me, the openstreetmaps data is very good at this and having all the info available offline is great.
I can't use it for public transportation though so I still use other apps most of the time.

@griotspeak if you've got any idea where I could buy one though...

@aeva Oh no. Well if you don’t find something suitable… I might possibly consider parting with mine. I don’t use it as much as I should. Not a promise but yeah
@griotspeak I'll figure something out. you should hang on to yours, it seems like a precious thing

@aeva I didn’t understand how precious until just now, I guess. Sorry! Didn’t mean to get hopes up

I like how this e-ink mp3 player *almost* nails the look of a plain white cardboard box with a halfassed pen drawing of a smart phone ui drawn on it https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Protect-Charging-Portable-Outdoor/dp/B0FDG4T3GH
i wonder how hackable it is 🤔

makes me wonder how hard it would be to build a mp3 player in a small white box with buttons halfassedly drawn on it. stuff an arduino into it. maybe there's some way to make the buttons work via capacitance?

like imagine, you see someone on the train wearing a pair of KSC75s plugged into what looks like a deck of cards wrapped in inkjet paper, drawn on with a sharpie to say "M3Ps" on the back, just "back, forward, play, pause, stop" written on the front. maybe a box drawn for a fake screen with a smiley face drawn inside it

actually come to think of it I could just hide regular clicky buttons behind the paper...

@aeva i think most Arduinos are too weak for audio playback
