How to block Bluesky from Mastodon:
-
@FediTips I feel more and more that your account is for advising people to use the Fediverse the way YOU like it.
Or if I ask how to bridge your account to Bluesky, you will also post a thread about this to explain it to the people?
How about communication with Threads? Can you explain it please? I'm a bit unsure about it.
And "virtue signaling" means what it means, I'm not sure why this expression shouldn't be used when it's appropriate?
@David @FediTips "Virtue signaling" is a derogatory term used by the right to dismiss those who talk about their life choices as snobs or ideological zealots. It is an attempt to turn personal preferences into a blemish on a person's character. You are not doing yourself any favours by using the term.
-
@FediTips Honestly? Yes, blocking servers is not something that should be done except with rare exceptions.
"Blocking" Bluesky (or rather the bridge) is no different from those who block mastodon.social.
And I'm still confused as to why people are so upset at the verification thing. Are people still confusing it with a seal of approval or something? If anything, it makes the account easier to block and prevents from blocking a parody account by mistake.
-
"I feel more and more that your account is for advising people to use the Fediverse the way YOU like it."
They asked me for the advice I posted. Are you saying I shoudn't give people advice when they ask for it?
"How about communication with Threads?"
Meta's dangerous approach to moderation has been linked to several genocides (e.g. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/dec/06/rohingya-sue-facebook-myanmar-genocide-us-uk-legal-action-social-media-violence ), so again I'd advise people to defederate it.
I've been saying this for years.

I am an unpaid volunteer trying to do my bit against the rise of fascism.
The reason I give up most of my spare time running my accounts and sites is to help people onto platforms that aren't owned and run by pro-fascist billionaires.
"And virtue signaling means what it means"
It's a meaningless phrase with its origins in the far right, which attempts to dismiss sincere concern for other human beings as somehow fake or staged. If you use it, this is what you imply.

-
@FediTips I mean, I'd like to not be patronizing but you're not helping when posting something like this.
Blocking the bridge is not blocking Bluesky. It does nothing on the Bluesky side, and all it does on the side of something doing it is preventing them from seeing posts from people on Bluesky who bridged here (i.e. who don't disregard the Fediverse and who want to communicate with it).
How does it help or do anything?
Are all Bluesky users guilty by association?
@David "all it does on the side of something doing it is preventing them from seeing posts from people on Bluesky who bridged here"
Yes. That's the point. Obviously there are technical differences between other instances and bridged platforms but for practical purposes that's what people mean when they say "block". That's what people are wanting to do, and so @FediTips is explaining how to do it.
-
People asked me how to do this, I am telling them. That's what my account is for.
"What is the purpose apart from virtue signaling?"
Show some respect for people's choices instead of using a phrase more associated with the far right.
"If you don't want to see a Bluesky account in the Fediverse, don't follow any. As simple as that."
No it isn't. If Bluesky accounts are bridged into your server you will see them pop up elsewhere, even if you don't follow them.

They are murderers. Do you not feel any rage at all at innocent people being murdered in the street?
If they were verifying and hosting a serial killer would you be fine with that?
"it makes the account easier to block"
It is not about blocking the account, it's about preventing the account spreading its dangerous hate and lies. Most will not block it, and they may be radicalised by such accounts.
-
@FediTips Seriously, that doesn't make a lick of sense.
You're not blocking Bluesky (you can't, it doesn't communicate with the Fediverse), you're blocking the bridge.
What is the purpose apart from virtue signaling? If a Fediverse account is not bridged, no one on the Bluesky side can see it.
Bluesky accounts bridged into the Fediverse allow them to be seen on the Fediverse. If you don't want to see a Bluesky account in the Fediverse, don't follow any. As simple as that.
@David@setouchi.social @FediTips@social.growyourown.services Virtue Signaling is the point with a lot of this stuff. Its the same thing that happened with Meta's attempt to federate threads. It's misguided in my opinion but some people are more sensitive then others about such things. I'm a big fan of meeting people where they are as long as where they are isn't an outright nazi bar.

@FediTips You missed my point about Threads. You said you're not telling people what they should do and how they should use the Fediverse.
So I'm asking you to please explain people how to connect with Threads, if you just "advise people." That's advice that's good to know.
I know you won't do it. And that's my point. You present your advice as objective or neutral when they're not.
I'm not saying they should, I'm saying that maybe you should be a bit more upfront about your editorial line.

@FediTips "the far right"?
Is there only one?

It's not sensitivity or "virtue signalling", it's genuine anger over what is being done to people. It is sincere concern for innocent human lives.
The entire reason I do my accounts and sites is because I am terrified of what is being done to vulnerable groups, and furious with those who are doing it.
If you disagree with this stance, you're free to unfollow me.

@FediTips "the far right"?
Is there only one?
Fascism is rising, the world is the most in danger it has been since 1939, we all have a duty as human beings to stop it.
Please put your energy into that instead of doing debating society crap.

"You present your advice as neutral"
I absolutely do not.
I am against fascism and bigotry.
My entire point for doing all my accounts and sites without pay is to try to fight the hatred.
Neutrality at a time like this is obscene.

@FediTips Don't you confuse "being upset at ICE" and "being upset at ICE being verified"? Because there is a difference.
They're a governmental agency, if Bluesky accepts them (and we can debate whether they should or not, I'm fine with that debate) why should they not be verified?
I'm pretty sure no one on Bluesky will be radicalized by such an account. The prejudice against people using Bluesky are pretty insane (as insane as the prejudice of people using Bluesky against the Fediverse) ⤵️

@FediTips The funny and sad thing being that most people are very similar, but let's throw expletive at each other and block each other instead.

No one should be having anything to do with kidnappers and murderers.
"I'm pretty sure no one on Bluesky will be radicalized by such an account"
The reason fascists want platforming is because it works. Every time they get an audience, a certain percentage will believe their hate-filled lies and their following grows.
Fascists need to be deplatformed in every way and at every opportunity. They are not discussing things in good faith, they are spreading hatred against innocent people.
-

Don't you dare "both sides" this.
There is one particular side that is doing the kidnappings and killings right now. We all need to be fighting against it.

How to block Bluesky from Mastodon:
1. Go to the profile page of the account @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy
2. Click ⋯
3. Click "Block Domain" to stop seeing Bluesky accounts
4. Click "Block" to prevent your own account being bridged to BlueskyYou may need to copy-paste @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy into the search box on your server to make the profile appear.
If you can't find the account @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy, your server is probably already blocking the Bluesky bridge.
@FediTips
This BSKY bridge is an opt in, you need to follow it and then it follows you back to bridge your posts. So blocking it is not really needed.
Btw. if the account already follows you, you can also remove it from your followers list. -

@FediTips
No. The US government arrived in mass on Bluesky months ago (and got blocked in mass right away), but only now there is an outcry because the accounts got a blue checkmark. I mean, seriously? And the US government arrived on Bluesky to "own the libs" or something like that.
Anyway, how are you deplatforming ICE by blocking the bridge? Could you explain?

@FediTips Bluesky users are doing the kidnapping and the killing? Wow... That's quite scary.
(sorry, I wasn't clear with "Most people" I meant: most users of both the Fediverse and Bluesky)
Honestly, take a deep breath, and think about what I'm telling you instead of reacting without really reading. I'm not trolling you, I'm trying to find a logic in blocking the bridge, and I don't find it.

Are you able to communicate with people without patronising them?
Your replies come across as troll-like, and if you keep replying in this fashion I'm going to assume this discussion isn't in good faith.
