#AskFedi do you have recommendations for an external hard drive that would be good to stock #Jellyfin media on?
Something fast and not too expensive? (say, less than 200 Euros). 1 Terabyte of storage is more than enough (my current library is about 250 GB)...
I cannot use any of my current drives because they are all encrypted and #Jellyfin needs something with read access (sans password) for every folder in the path. So I'm going for a dedicated external drive.
I would really appreciate your advice! (and heads-up: I'm leaving home soon to pick up my little one from pre-school so I may take a while to reply) 😅

I have had good luck doing backups with rotating Samsung T7s (2 To/TB B087DDGWKL) Amazon FR = 150 EUR or 200 EUR for the T7 Shield. You can enable encryption but you don't have to and you can disable it if you need to. -

#selfhosting@elena Anything will do. My media is on a 10 years-old 2,5" external HDD, for movies up to 30 Go, I have no speed problems. Absolutely no need to pay extra for SSD speeds. I only buy Western Digital (and used to buy LaCie), and got one failure on one disk in 20 years. Really, you have no reason to spend 200€.

#selfhosting@elena I would buy separate enclosure and separate drive since complete sets don't have guarantees for what drive you get. And if you only need 1TB then SSDs are about the same price. The price gap is a bit bigger for 2TB but you would still be within your budget.
For example I have a Ugreen m2 enclosure with a 2TB Kingston NV3 since those were the cheap options at the time. If you want quality then a 2TB Samsung 990 EVO should still be in budget. Don't know what's the best non-budget enclosure

@vincent thank you Vincent! I'm also in the club of "used to buy LaCie, now I buy WD drives". I have a ridiculous amount of drives at home but I cannot use any of the existing ones because they're all encrypted. Will look into WD or Samsung for the dedicated Jellyfin drive

@elena Asking just to be sure: you know you can wipe them clean and unencrypted, right? Wipe‘em to exFAT and voilà ! At least if you encrypted them yourself when formatting… (Or it’s some kind of special drive that works differently?)

@vincent yes I know but they’re all in use and can’t wipe them for this 😅

#selfhosting@elena whatever you're buying, buy at least two of you care about what's in it. Use one as main, periodically update the other copy.
