I've got a similar thing - it's an old freezer basket lined with wire mesh.
It takes a fair bit of shaking, but it works.

@NatureMC Trommels have been around for quite some time. A quick search shows lots of designs.
I have used this one for a few years and it’s sieved a few tons of compost. It needed a little repairing.
It’s made entirely from recycled materials. I threaded old bike gear/brake cables through the mesh and spoke holes to attach the mesh to the rims.
It’s so much quicker, easier and more enjoyable than sifting compost with a hand held riddle or throwing spades of compost at a mesh screen.

@Broadfork Interesting design. But why the effort? I usually just spread the compost between the plants and leave it at that. Who cares about some bits (usually avocado remains) which are not yet fully broken down?

Now I just take my compost for a spin.

@morph I use the sieved compost for seed starts and making soil blocks so I don’t want the larger pieces in there.
Sieving compost with a trommel is really not much effort at all.

@Broadfork I must confess to my shame that, as a lazy gardener, I have never sieved compost. 😎 I let the little critters do the work, and I don't mind some small pieces of wood.
But I don't have amounts like you, and use the compost when it's like soil.For bigger amounts this trommel is great!

@Mactonex @Broadfork we need to see an "action shot" per se... do you just hold the wheels and rotate it manually?

@Mactonex I just rotate the cylinder by hand but there are DIY powered trommels out there.
The wooden frame the cylinder sits on has two old broom handles as rollers to aid the turn. The compost doesn’t need much of a turn before it’s fully sieved.

@NatureMC I don’t buy in any compost so the sieved compost goes in the seedling and soil block mix.
Most of the compost I make goes on the beds unsieved as a mulching compost sometimes in autumn but more likely in spring.

@yvan @Mactonex The photo is a maybe three years old. I just turn the cylinder with hands on one wheel rim to run it over the rollers. The rollers spin freely on the broom handles to do the work.
I feed the compost in from the far end of the photo. What’s too big to drop through the mesh into the wheelbarrow tips into the trug at the other end.

Testing the Pressure Limits for Glass in Water Cooling Blocks
Many people who use water cooling in their computer systems like to go full-bore with ‘aquarium’ aesthetic, which includes adding a window to their cooling blocks so that they see the water flowing through the window from behind the case’s window. Traditionally PMMA acrylic is used for these windows, as it’s quite durable and easy to handle.
Using glass offers some advantages over acrylic, but has its own disadvantages, most of all that it’s hard to process, but also that it’s known for shattering quite easily if pushed beyond its limits.
This is why [der8auer] as a manufacturer of such water blocks has now spent a few years investigating the viability of using glass for this purpose. First and foremost is safety, with an early prototype glass water block suddenly shattering without clear cause.
Although normally the water cooling loop is only expected to experience pressures of about 600 mbar, the new glass windows that are now entering mass-production had to be tested to their breaking point. This involves pumping water into a few test blocks until they fail, using the test rig that you can see above.
First the big GPU water block was tested, with the acrylic version breaking at around 8-9 bar, while the glass plate shattered at around 5 bar. The failure mode was also interesting, with the glass plate shattering into fragments, while the two acrylic plates tested failed in a completely different location and manner.
A smaller water block with glass window failed at about 10 bar, demonstrating mostly that smaller glass windows are a lot sturdier. Effectively glass windows in water cooling loops are viable, and they also do not suffer from e.g. discoloration, but you do give up a big chunk of your safety margin if your water cooling loop suffers a major pressurization event. Which of course should never happen, but we’re definitely looking forward to the upcoming field trials of these new water blocks.
