Quick message to all fediverse newcomers:Moderation in the fediverse is done by humans.

  • Quick message to all fediverse newcomers:

Moderation in the fediverse is done by humans. There are no bots that shadowban you based on detecting certain keywords. This has some important consequences:

    1) If you see a rule-breaking post, click the "report" button and write a report. The actual living, breathing creatures who run your instance will review the report.

The location of the report button varies depending on your client/app software: it's usually near "reply" or "boost."

    2) The text you write in a report matters, because it will be read by an actual person. The mods are
not just counting the number of reports.

    3) If you're talking about a sensitive topic like suicide, you should
not bleep it out like "sui-de". You won't be banned for typing the actual word out. You should instead use a content warning for your post to warn your readers. Some users who don't wish to see certain topics can voluntarily apply word filters to their own timelines, and bleeping words is rude because it bypasses their filters.

@2something@transfem.social I can verify this, but if I may add: some moderation teams do have tooling to flag content, but such reports are only visible to internal moderation channels to be reviewed by actual people running these tools - and not automatically handled by the moderation tools themselves.

@2something 4) Actually, never bleep out words. People have filters to hide content that triggers them, don't fight against it

@2something also: one of the strengths of the Fediverse is its variety. If you are unsatisfied with the moderation of the instance you're on (slow to react, mutes/blocks accounts you want to follow, does not mute/blocks accounts you deem dangerous or spammy, etc), consider moving to a different instance with a moderation that better fits your preferences & needs.

Mai ( @rouh ) is from Gaza and new on Mastodon. She doesn't know yet how to network. Consequently, she doesn't receive a lot of donations. The thing is: She takes care of a camp of 30 children. While suffering from genocide herself! Truly heartwarming. She could really use our support. The way to network on Mastodon is to FOLLOW her and share/BOOST her posts.Unlike other social networks, Mastodon isn't controlled by a corporate algorithm, or any algorithm that would make her discoverable. It is up to us. But that also means we see only what we want to see. 🙂I myself, to stay organized, use lists a lot. I have a list named "Gaza Verified" to which I add everybody from https://gaza-verified.org . In case your worries about an overwhelming timeline hinders you from following more people. Please follow Mai ( @rouh ) and, if you're generous, donate to her.If you want to copy my tip using a dedicated list, also consider following everybody else listed on https://gaza-verified.org verified by @aral. 😊Thank you!#genocide #palestine #gaza #MutualAid #FediTipshttps://mastodon.social/@rouh/115266714032813187

Can I ask a favour? If you see someone who is asking for help using this place, and if no one else is helping them, could you tag me into the conversation and/or link to my website https://fedi.tips?I'm trying to provide unofficial tech support for people using Mastodon and the wider Fediverse. I'm especially keen to help new people who want easy-to-understand advice, but they won't see me and I won't see them unless someone tags me.Thanks 🙏 #FediTips #Fediverse #Mastodon
