Quick message to all fediverse newcomers:Moderation in the fediverse is done by humans.

  • Quick message to all fediverse newcomers:

Moderation in the fediverse is done by humans. There are no bots that shadowban you based on detecting certain keywords. This has some important consequences:

    1) If you see a rule-breaking post, click the "report" button and write a report. The actual living, breathing creatures who run your instance will review the report.

The location of the report button varies depending on your client/app software: it's usually near "reply" or "boost."

    2) The text you write in a report matters, because it will be read by an actual person. The mods are
not just counting the number of reports.

    3) If you're talking about a sensitive topic like suicide, you should
not bleep it out like "sui-de". You won't be banned for typing the actual word out. You should instead use a content warning for your post to warn your readers. Some users who don't wish to see certain topics can voluntarily apply word filters to their own timelines, and bleeping words is rude because it bypasses their filters.

@2something@transfem.social I can verify this, but if I may add: some moderation teams do have tooling to flag content, but such reports are only visible to internal moderation channels to be reviewed by actual people running these tools - and not automatically handled by the moderation tools themselves.

@2something 4) Actually, never bleep out words. People have filters to hide content that triggers them, don't fight against it

@2something also: one of the strengths of the Fediverse is its variety. If you are unsatisfied with the moderation of the instance you're on (slow to react, mutes/blocks accounts you want to follow, does not mute/blocks accounts you deem dangerous or spammy, etc), consider moving to a different instance with a moderation that better fits your preferences & needs.

@juergen 1. I have had several people ask how they can opt out, they bridged a long time ago and didn't know how to opt out. The post above is trying to help them as well as those who want to stop seeing Bluesky.2. The bridge is only opt in for Fedi accounts, it's not opt in for websites. Some of my websites have been bridged by brid.gy without my permission or knowledge.

I've seen a few people put content warnings on their "looking for work" posts. I recommend you DON'T do this. Not everyone who comes across your post will bother to expand it. Worse, content warnings prevent your post from appearing in Trending lists, limiting your reach. I'm not sure what purpose a CW would even serve here—if someone finds the fact that you're looking for work offensive or traumatizing, that's a them problem, not a you problem. #FediHired #GetFediHired #FediTips

Everything in your main "Home" timeline on Mastodon is there for one of these reasons:-An account you follow posted it-An account you follow boosted it-The post contains a hashtag you follow-An account you follow replied to an account you also follow-An account you follow replied to itselfNothing else gets in your main feed, it's just these things. If hashtags are at the end of a post they are displayed in a smaller font below the post, which some people miss.#FediTips #Mastodon

p.s. If you're wondering why you don't hear more about web apps, it's because Apple and Google hate them. Web apps totally bypass Apple and Google app stores.Apple and Google enjoy controlling and taxing apps, but they have no control over web apps and don't get any money from them.Apple even tried to stop web apps completely, luckily they had to back off: https://open-web-advocacy.org/blog/apple-backs-off-killing-web-appsWeb apps are a way of getting apps directly from the people who make them, without big tech getting in the way.
