Good morning.

  • Good morning. 🍊🍊🍊

    3 October 2025

I had a plumber come in yesterday to unstop our kitchen sink. He was a nice enough young man and did a good job, but the cost to get him to snake out the drain gave me sticker shock. It was nearly twice what it was the last time I called them. I imagined being told in an Eastern European accent "the price is the price." The plumbing company is the one I normally call, but the next time I need the sink unplugged I might consider calling somebody else, or not I'll have to wait and see how I feel at the time.

We're supposed to walk this morning but I'm again getting a late start. We may just do a few laps around the property today. One lap is roughly a quarter mile so I can get a little exercise in that way and Charlie stays off the leash when we stay here so he can run and jump or just get inquisitive about all of the surrounding scents. I'll need to dig out my waterproof hiking shoes; there is dew in the morning.

After that, I may tend to the bird feeders, because they don't tend to themselves. I get to feeling a little bad when I look out and there are birds just hanging around empty feeders while staring at the backdoor. You'd think that I'm exaggerating, which I may be, but it sure seems like that's what they do.

“But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world.” — E.B. White

“Every morning was a cheerful invitation to make my life of equal simplicity, and I may say innocence, with Nature herself.” — Henry David Thoreau

  • @stefano The important thing first. Enjoy your lasagnas! ;-)

Sounds like a "If life gives you lemons, make lemonade", Stefano.

I keep my fingers crossed for a speedy repair. Especially when criticial infrastructure like a hospital is affected it should be done asap.

  • I took a walk and went to check the spot where they cut the FTTC line. There’s a hole, just like the one that was in front of my house when they broke the water pipes. The road is covered in dried mud, there’s a temporary patch to supply water to the neighborhood, and the main cable/fiber is completely severed. No one was working on it.

In other words, the providers' promises to restore service by this morning, or at the latest tomorrow morning, are pointless, because I don't think they'll be able to intervene over the weekend.

In the meantime, I've had to postpone an important installation because I need a stable connection. I can't do it at the office either, both because it's still unusable due to , and because I can't move all the machines there.

Some of my neighbors don't have a 4G/5G backup connection and are avoiding leaving their homes, since there's currently a spike in burglaries and their cameras are unreachable from outside. Even some alarm systems are affected, which in my opinion is a design flaw.

More, all the 4G/5G networks are overloaded (more than 2000 persons are affected by this problem) and it's also affecting the nearby hospital. Slowdowns there as well, since the nearest base stations are often the ones close to the hospital. Personally, I configured the Chateau to use the bands farther from the hospital, so as to leave more resources available for them.
It struggles a bit more and my bandwidth drops, but that's not a priority for me today.

At least today I had a good lasagna 😉
