@aeva huh. yeah, gonna start calling it creepy too. thanks. makes me feel better about the very few times it *does* bring up something relevant, like that side eyed thanks you give to creepy random strangers that somehow managed to help you without you even wanting them to.

@aeva they appear to tweak their algo regularly and sometimes it's *surprisingly* good for me, but the most recent tweak (5-ish days ago?) has been an unmitigated disaster

It has to know every little detail of your life in select the exactly right cookie at the exact right time for you to reject because in that moment you don't feel like a cookie.It's the little old lady problem... she has to want to cross that exact street at that exact time, so randomly helping her across is annoying to her.

@evan@cosocial.ca "young", "inexperienced", "small". That particular constellation of adjectives would lead to a pretty bad product I think!
The important keyword here is "small". A small but experienced team will run circles around any other combination. Age is less important (but tends to correlate with experience, one would assume.)

@otherdog @tante In my own analysis I discounted that cost to zero and still found myself estimating very heavy costs, just from the downsides of using the model itself, which AFAICT are going _totally_ unmeasured almost everywhere

Thanks to everyone who responded!
One of the persistent myths of software engineering is that a young, inexperienced, small team can make a product better and faster than an experienced team.
I haven't found this to be the case. Most of the brand-new teams I've seen have been pretty shaky.
So, I'm going to say "somewhat important".
