And, at the end, quite sweet despite the patina of the era: "WHEN you have completed your dress, it may not be perfect in every respect, but if you have been careful, it will surely be very nice, and something of which you may be very proud, because it represents much care and thought.Finish it well to the last loop, and sew in the dress shields. Take out the basting threads, be sure that the seams are finished, and that it is all in “‘apple-pie order.”Don’t point out to people any defects that may exist.Do not lift up the overskirt to show that the underskirt is pieced down with goods of a different kind.Do not show that the under-arm pieces are faded.Do not tell anybody that the full front covers buttonholes that are torn out.Do not say that the beautiful bias band around the bottom of the skirt hides a ghastly muslin gap. --"

Second ever whip stitch repair in my life isn't so bad. Clearly not seamstress-perfect, but I'm relatively pleased. #VisibleRepair #repair #sewing

@TazPoltorak @Bfordham some toy machines cheat by only being able to make a chain stitch instead of the lockstitch used by modern¹ machines: those aren't really sewing machines, they can't be used to follow instructions designed for sewing machines and I'd recommend staying away from them even as a “starting” machine, because they really aren't one.the main issue being that the chain stitch unravels, and using it to make functional garments will require a lot more handsewing and different techniques that those used today.as the first sewing machine ever built, they were time saver when sewing meters and meters of ruffles on a 1850s dress, when you were used to sew 1840s dresses by hand, but really, sewing machine technology has moved on :)¹ i.e. since the second half of the 19th century :D

Second craft show ever - Stress!!Sold a few things so not a total bust. Need to work on better displays, I think. While packing up after the show the one figurine that was just the original mold and *didn't* have the additional round base poured for the bottom of it was toppled by my husband, fell to the floor, and broke. That's a sign to *always* supplement the original mold with a stable base for them, I suppose. #CraftShow #Handmade #HandCrafted #Sewing #Craft #Art #FediArt #MastoArt

@TazPoltorak I'd be quite wary of polar fleece (and synthetic wadding) melting at oven temperaturesif you have some wool scraps they may work instead of the thermo insulation, but maybe you'd need a bigger thinkness, and with cotton you'd definitely need more than either.

Found the perfect fabric that had previously been designated absolute trash and put in the scrap box. There doesn't seem to be a slug emoji so I am using this one to express the same emotions 🤘

So nice, I made it twice. It’s almost identical to the first one, but this one has a very different lace trim. With over 50 pieces, this jacket is not an easy project. Black is the hardest color to sew becuase it’s the hardest to see. One of the hardest parts was keeping Kepler’s white dog hair off of it. #Sewing

@sinituulia @laumapret my mother always had a bottle of spray starch to be carefully ignored while ironing clothing, so I have one too :Dlately when I want to feel fancy or I have to spend the whole day outside I've started to use it when ironing my linen shirts, and it does work in making them feel nice and crinkle less, but it doesn't make stuff significantly stiffer like I've seen in the videos and blog posts of people dipping garments in starch.Maybe it's possible, if one uses *a lot*, but I'm not sure it's really designed for being used that way.I'm not sure how much it costs, because I still have the bottle I stol… er, borrowed from my mother¹ a few years ago, since each shirt-ful takes very little, and I suspect that for this usecase it would actually cost less than making it at home from food-grade starch, as the latter needs to be made in a bigger batch (and it doesn't keep, not it's really safe to starch all of your clothing and store them starched long term, I believe).I still want to try and make the liquid one to dip some collars and petticoats in, but there are only so many hours in the day, and starching looks like a couple days of commitment.¹ we live close enough that she can easily take it back once ever couple years when she needs it :)
