@quixoticgeek maybe it's less to do with this being an "optimal" design and more to do with this being a compromise that's way easier to get permission to deploy. Maybe they have permission for "a bench", but not "a bench plus roof". Or, maybe it's that with this form, you can get more of them onto a single flatbed to drive around and place them. If it is one of these things, I hope it's the former, because the latter would be a much stupider reason for the compromise.

@kevinrns that’s just the electric grid, as I said. Total energy usage is 4-5x what we use on the grid.

@impermanen_ I lot of heavy appliances can be scheduled to run during the day when nobody is home, like dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, even air-conditioning can be put to run to cool the house, and make it cheaper to keep it cool when you get home

@jensorensen The one issue I have with solar and wind is that it needs to trade one contamination (air pollution from gas) for another (water and soil pollution from mining and ore processing).

@brianb Start with how big of a system you want, this gives you a scale for all of the components. The gotchas tend to be around selecting too small inverters relative to the total panel output. Enphase iQ microinverters match well to the biggest single panels in a one-to-one format. The outputs parallel together in their “combiner” box. @smallsolar my solar panels are impossible to see unless you're on the roof or flying. I've only ever seen them in photos.We didn't hide them on purpose, it was just an accident of the shape of our roof. We live in a terrace, without space between houses to step back and see the south-ish facing slope. This is pretty common for terraced houses, so there's a fair amount of potential stealth solar there.

Die Bilder des gezeigten Stadtteils Al-Furqan stimmen bei Google Maps und Google Earth überein. Bei Maps steht zwar "Bilder ©2026 Airbus CNES /Airbus Maxar Technologies", wenn man bei Google Earth schaut, sieht man aber, dass die Bilder der Area am 07.07.2023 entstanden sind. Das sich da in knapp 3 Jahren ordentlich was getan hat, halte ich für plausibel

Y'know, it's actually fun to nerd out about #solar panels. This is what a day looks like when it starts foggy ,then clears up at the start of the afternoon, just as the sun is at its best angle for the solar panels.

@ianturton It won't physically run the meter backwards. Any SMETS meter will detect it as export.Plug in solar also has to automatically disconnect.

@mem_somerville I’m probably only about 3-4 hours north of you, still in New England, but just a little colder on average. When our panels get covered in snow, they tend to stay that way. 😭Still, we save thousands of dollars a year in energy costs. We burn no fuel oil, no natural gas, no propane, and one of our current cars is fully electric*. The panels paid for themselves and then some within seven years. *We will probably have to go back to having a hybrid, for reasons

@billhorsman The BBC article also mentions that, if approved, proposed solar farms would cover 30,000 acres in Lincolnshire.To keep things in perspective, that is about the same amount of land as is taken up by golf courses in the county.
