  • Dave is looking awfully slim starting out. I don't think he learned the BMI lesson. He probably does deserve another shot, though.

Oh, Nicole is back, too. She was great.

The good news is I don't think there will be any temptation to build a boat. It looks like there will be a river and plains, maybe? No oceans to call out to them.

  • Polymer Skins That Change Color and Texture When Exposed to Water

Researchers at Stanford University recently came up with an interesting way (Phys.org summary) to create patterns and colors that emerge when a polymer is exposed to water. Although the paper itself is sadly paywalled with no preprint available, it’s fairly easily summarized and illustrated with details from the Supplementary Data section. The polymer used is poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), which when exposed to an electron beam (electron-beam lithography) undergoes certain changes that become apparent when said water is added.

The polymer is hygroscopic, but the electron beam modifies the extent to which a specific area swells up, thus making it possible to create patterns that depend on the amount of electron beam exposure. In order to ‘colorize’ the polymer, complex cavities are created that modify the angular distribution of light, as illustrated in the top image from the Supplemental Data docx file.

By varying the concentration of IPA versus water, the intermediate swelling states can be controlled. Although this sounds pretty advanced, if you look at the supplementary videos that are already sped up a lot, you can see that it is a very slow process. Compared to an octopus and kin whose ability to alter their own skin texture and coloring is legendary and directly controlled by their nervous system, this isn’t quite in the same ballpark yet, even if it’s pretty cool to watch.

  • She is the one I think most deserved a second shot at it. And, I guess the producers agree, since she's the first one they introduced.

I don't get why Britt is back. I mean, I liked him OK, but he was a tough guy and was out pretty quick.

Randy!? They brought barefoot Randy back? Now they're just being silly.

  • Normally, I wouldn't comment on someone's weight, but I think it's notable that Carleigh was quite slim at the start of season 3, and she almost certainly would have won if she'd come into the game 20 pounds heavier to start with. She has learned that lesson. That's commitment. (Still fine af.)

Yesterday I've tried #FreeBSD on a decent laptop again. I prefer Gnome/GDM over Plasma so just went by the handbook tutorial. Based on my findings, GDM is broken for 6 months on #FreeBSD and nobody cares, despite the budget of $750,000 allocated in Q4 2025 to the "Laptop Support and Usability Improvements Project". UPDATE: KDE has been voted FBSD community favourite.I will try to find a fix for GDM next week. This post is not quite a rant but more like a bookmark:https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=287955

Bringin' Mastodon to FreeBSD desktop.Trying to use Mastodon on #freebsd desktop and found zero GUI clients available in current (2025.Q4) packages. However, it is always possible to build one thanks to open source software and active community. After ducking around I have decided to build the #tuba client to work with XFCE desktop, which requires few more packages to be present:- Meson build system is must-have to compile and install the app.- Gnome libraries are required as listed in project README.- Unfortunately, you could not build from main branch since the GTK4 version is a bit outdated in packages then set in project requirements, but version v.0.9.2 is fine (checkout the relevant tag).- Don't forget to install GNU gettext package which is not listed in dependencies, but is mandatory to build project translations.- Vala compiler is a must, which is installed with vala package as well.Installation process is smooth and simple after that:- Install required packages (probably you might need a bit more, check the project README): pkg install gettext gtk4 meson vala- Clone the branch with git clone --depth 1 --branch v0.9.2 git@github.com:GeopJr/Tuba.git && cd Tuba- Setup build system (I'm using target since familiar to Java project structure): meson setup target && cd target- Build and install application, it will require super-user privileges to install binaries and resources to /usr/local/* directories: meson compile && meson installTo run Tuba you might need to setup Gnome Keyring (see https://github.com/GeopJr/Tuba/wiki/keyring-issues for guidance). But first you might need to install both SeaHorse and Gnome Keyring packages with pkg install seahorse gnome-keyring. After the keyring setup the application is running smoothly on #freebsd15 desktop.BTW, I see that the net-im/tuba is also available, but I found no package with it.

FreeBSD 15.0 released with pkgbaseThe FreeBSD team has released FreeBSD 15.0, and with it come several major changes, one of which you will surely want to know more about if you're a FreeBSD user. Since this change will eventually drastically change the way you use FreeBSD, we should get right into it.Up until now, a full, system-wide update for FreeBSD - as in, updating both the base operating shttps://www.osnews.com/story/143942/freebsd-15-0-released-with-pkgbase/#FreeBSD
