  • Big deals, omg Mods can move a post, with replies and votes, to another community. The change federates to other instances (except Lemmy, for now. I've been in discussion with devs from NodeBB and Lemmy about how this will work, they are on board). Upload video files while creating a video post - no external host needed. Admin setting to limit who can do this (to save space). Realtime chat - conversation immediately updates on screen when a new PM arrives. More good stuff Author-deleted posts are still visible to them and anyone with the url. No more loss of high-value comments with the OP deletes. Search filters - nsfw and minimum post score Improve speed of cross-posting form on mobile Emoji tokens like  can be used in post or comment body. No GUI support yet. Admin setting to disable local copies of remote images - good for single-user instances Replying to a comment marks associated inbox item as read Updated HPT-Fruits theme 196 no longer excluded from default community import Remove unused community rating feature Remove unused instance vote weight feature Remove ineffective þ to 'th' replacement Improved accessibility - better contrast, fixed many incorrectly-used aria-labels Updated translations - Basque, Chinese, Japanese API: Admins can ban/unban users through the API. piefed.world was maintaining custom code for this, hopefully it'll make their version upgrades faster. Bugs fixed PMs Markdown parsing Speed up loading of profile pages for admin users Friendica post parsing Passkeys login UX tweak To upgrade

    To upgrade from 1.4.x:

git pull git checkout v1.5.x ./deploy.sh or ./deploy-docker.sh
    read more

  • If you go to https://piefed.social/search you'll see two new fields.

The "Minimum score" field is where you can put in a number and only posts with at least that many net upvotes will be shown. This will help you weed out posts from RSS feeds, by bots or generally low-quality posts.

There is also a NSFW one:

    image

The first option is the default one and will remove NSFW content from your search results based on what your profile setting is. The others are for overriding that so you can search for sexy linux posts without seeing regular posts about linux. etc.

piefed.social doesn't have NSFW communities so this won't be very interesting here but feddit.online has plenty.

  • I've made it so that when someone deletes their own post it is still viewable, including the comments. The post author and body will NOT be visible. Deleted posts will not show up in communities, search results, etc just as before - you need the URL of the post to get to it. Bookmark a deleted post within 7 days or it will be deleted for real.

    image

Ask your instance admin to upgrade to v1.4.4. Chances are they'll be on 1.4.x already so this will be easy for them.

  • This is our biggest release yet, including more finished tasks than any of our previous ones. Below is a summary of the highlights:

    What's new

Posts & communities can be labelled as AI-generated and people can choose to hide all posts tagged that way. Very similar to how NSFW works.

Comments can be marked as an Answer, like on StackOverflow.

React to posts and comments with an emoji.

Hide an individual post from yourself, without blocking the author.

PieFed is now in the Yunohost app store, making initial setup easier.

When banned from a remote instance you cannot make local-only posts in their communities.

Honeypot to automatically IP ban badly-behaved crawlers.

https://lemmy-federate.com integration, making PieFed communities get more exposure.

"Share on Mastodon" menu item on posts.

Vastly improve docs for new developers, see https://codeberg.org/rimu/pyfedi/src/branch/main/docs/developer_docs.

Language selection is more visible during post creation.

Tag clouds can also be viewed as a list of tags.

    View post/comment markdown.

Bot accounts are not included in community statistics.

    Footnote support in markdown.

    Polish translation.

Better HTTP caching, which reduces dependence on Cloudflare.

    Bugs

    Passkey fixes.

Polls can now have up to 15 options.

    User profile performance improved.

Don't allow bypassing minimum username length and post title with whitespace.

Polls and Events can no longer be posted into Lemmy communities.

    API

Additional user settings can be set through the api, including Extra Fields.

    Fetch url metadata.

    Sort comments by controversial.

    Comment search now works.

    Hashtags.

    Events.

    Polls.

Emoji reactions on posts and comments.

    See https://piefed.social/c/piefed_api for more details.

    To upgrade

    To upgrade from 1.3.x:

git pull git checkout v1.4.x ./deploy.sh or ./deploy-docker.sh

There is a big database migration that will take a few minutes to run. How long will vary depending on how old your instance is - older instances will have more content to process. It took ~25 minutes on piefed.social so expect it to be less than that.

  • After 5 months of chipping away at it, PieFed is now an installable 'app' in the Yunohost store! It's been there for a couple of weeks actually but until this weekend it had a scary red exclamation mark because some automated tests hadn't ran yet. But that's gone now so I feel confident about recommending it to others.

Yunohost is a linux distro for servers that has a web gui for installing and managing services, that takes all the hassle out of self-hosting. How to get started with Yunohost.

@squirrel@piefed.kobel.fyi and @michael@piefed.chrisco.me have had good success setting up their instances already: https://piefed.social/c/piefed_meta/p/1561141/thanks-to-rimu-ericgaspar-and-tituspijean-yunohost-has-a-working-piefed-setup

  • One of the long-standing issues we have in/on the fediverse is that when I have a link in my post that goes to another post on my instance, people on other instances will click that link and be taken to MY instance, where they can't comment, don't have an account, aren't logged in, etc and they will try to log in using their login credentials for their home instance then wonder why it doesn't work.

When someone links to https://lemmy.world/post/39832275 and I'm on piefed.social I want to see https://piefed.social/c/news/p/1544770/national-parks-ordered-to-check-gift-shops-for-dei-type-items not the copy on lemmy.world!

As of PieFed v1.4, links like that will automatically be converted to link to the local copy of the post, where 'local' is whatever is local for the reader. See the linked video where I demonstrate this in action.

  • I’ve just added a score parameter to the community RSS feeds so you can get a RSS feed of posts at or above that score. e.g. https://piefed.social/community/fediverse/feed?score=20

If there is interest then we can add more filters, for flair/tag, etc. But from the server logs it doesn't seem like many people use RSS.

  • rimu@piefed.social when the question is federated outward, is it of type of question? 😛

@reiver I'd consider interoperating social networks to be "federated", but I know it's not a precise term. There are similar ambiguities with other commonly used terms: decentralization, server, node, instance, and so on. We have our personal definitions but find that others have a different mental model than ours. It might be interesting to have a collaborative social web glossary that captures the variations of how these terms are used.

Vacations are wonderful. It is a privilege to be able to travel without worry. It's also wonderful to be home, and to have the time to work on projects I care about. With those thoughts in mind, I present release v3.1.1 of Ktistec, an ActivityPub server written in the Crystal programming language! This release is a mixed bag of small features and improvements:AddedAuto-link URLs in posts. (fixes #24)Support searching by actor username. (fixes #102)Support hourly granularity in metrics charts.FixedMark actor as down if refresh fails.Remove draft posts from the everything collection.Ignore charts with no points in the date range.Ensure HTTP::Client instances are closed.I added support for multiple users at the beginning of the month. I'm very interested in feedback on how that's working out for anyone using it.#ktistec #fediverse #activitypub #crystallang
