I would go through a lot of TPU to keep myself custom orthic insoles for more than about 5 pairs.

@evan I'm not 100% sure I'm at less than 25. I'm pretty sure I'm double digits in docs alone. But some are hard to access due to their location in the large closet so.. out of sight, out of mind.

I always seem to wear the same SAS work shoes, but I do have some other, virtually unused shoes, including formal dress shoes, off-brand not-Croc plastic sandles, and some duck boots.

@evan in the before time? Steel toe boots for work and 1 pair shoes for all other of life's activities. Now? Shoot. I can't get enough. I'm not up to 25 yet, but I plan to far outpace that in the next couple years. 😁

@evan Depends what you mean by "shoes". I have different footwear for different purposes, but only one pair of each.

Hopelessly privileged, but there needs to be an escape hatch for inherited footwear of which I have two pairs, one of which are ancient.

@evan @mayintoronto Interpreting "shoes" broadly: four pairs that I expect to wear over the course of the year depending on temperature, one operable but not normally worn pair¹, and then two pairs of sandals with the straps sort of broken that I can wander outside in for quick, lazy errands.
¹ I picked up a pair of inexpensive bike shoes at one point to see if they worked any better than plain footwear, and the answer was "no". I kept them and I could wear them in a pinch.

@evan 1 pair of sneakers, 1 pair of hiking boots, 1 pair of hiking sandals, 3 pairs of nicer sandals, 1 pair of ankle boots. Even without flip flops (for the pool) or slippers (I only use them during winter), I've reached 7.

@evan 1 pair of barn boots. 1 pair of hiking boots. 1 pair of slip on Chelsea boots. 1 pair of walking shoes. 2 pair of slippers (one for home and one for going to other people's homes). And a dozen old shoes in the basement because "I may need them to use in the garden at some point & I hate throwing things away if there is some use to them." 😜 😂
At first I thought the 6-25 option was unusual... but I don't after taking inventory. I have 6 shoes on active duty, & about 4-6 pairs on stand-by.

Testing Whether Heated Chambers Help Brittle Filaments
Some FDM filaments are pretty brittle even if properly dried and stored, especially those which contain carbon fiber (CF) or similar additives like glass fiber (GF). This poses a problem in that these filaments can snap even within the PTFE tube as they’re being guided towards the extruder. Here a community theory is that having an actively heated chamber can help prevent this scenario, but is it actually true? [Dr. Igor Gaspar] of the My Tech Fun YouTube channel gave this myth a try to either confirm or bust it.
The comments suggested that heating the chamber to 65°C will help, but there’s little information online to support this theorem. To test the claim, a heated chamber was used along with a bending rig to see at which angle the filament would snap. In total five different filaments from three manufacturers (Polymaker, Qidi and YXPolyer) were tested, including Qidi’s PET-GF and PAHT-GF as the sole non-CF filaments.
A big question is how long exactly the filament will spend inside the heated chamber after making its way from the spool, which would be about 2.5 minutes with a 500 mm tube. For the test 5 minutes was used for the best possible result. Despite this, the results show that even with the standard deviation kept in mind, the heating actually seems to make the filaments even more brittle.
Considering that in general CF seems to simply weaken the polymer matrix after printing, this finding adds to the question of whether these CF and GF-infused filaments make any sense at all.
