How many pairs of shoes do you own?

@evan @mayintoronto Interpreting "shoes" broadly: four pairs that I expect to wear over the course of the year depending on temperature, one operable but not normally worn pair¹, and then two pairs of sandals with the straps sort of broken that I can wander outside in for quick, lazy errands.

¹ I picked up a pair of inexpensive bike shoes at one point to see if they worked any better than plain footwear, and the answer was "no". I kept them and I could wear them in a pinch.

@evan 1 pair of sneakers, 1 pair of hiking boots, 1 pair of hiking sandals, 3 pairs of nicer sandals, 1 pair of ankle boots. Even without flip flops (for the pool) or slippers (I only use them during winter), I've reached 7.

@evan 2-5, which according to my boyfriend is too many lmao. The guy has one pair of hiking boots he uses year round. I would actually die from overheating in summer if I did that though!

@evan If I count things like boots and flip flops as "shoes" i get a pretty high count. I've got rubber boots, and winter boots, and water booties, and rock climbing shoes, and "shoes" that are great for getting in and out of your canoe all day for portages, while protecting you from rocks.

I have my daily drivers, and two other pairs of everyday sorts of shoes. But then I have loads of special-purpose footwear: slippers for around the house. Down booties for camping. Some keen sandals that I can slip on for quick trips into the yard. Hiking boots, gum boots, several pair of neoprene booties for sea kayaking. Snowshoes? It’s got shoes right in the name. Then I have a pair of dress shoes which get worn less frequently than any of the rest. As I get older, I tend to abandon a sport every time I tidy the closet or garage, so, as of last year, I can no longer claim ski boots in my inventory.

@evan It really depends what counts: winter boots? Flip flops? Slippers? Water shoes? Steel toe boots? So many footwear required beyond running shoes / dress shoes.

@evan I figure that I need 5:

1.) The new pair for adventures where you should have nice shoes
2.) The old pair (with new insoles ordered with the new shoes) for adventures where you don't want to get the new shoes dirty (walks through the woods, lawn mowing, etc)
3.) Sandles for when the dog wants to go outside at 3am and it is an emergency
4.) "Out and about" sandles, for like when it is hot outside and you want to go for a bike ride
5.) $500 motorcycle boots that are meant to keep your toes from being ground off at 50mph

@rickscully @spraoi orthotics shop in Fisher Ave. does 2-for-1 and does traditional plaster casting. So after a few years I have enough to rotate thru various footwear. I'm not wearing more than 1 set of orthotics at a time.

I think I'm somewhere in the high teens, low 20s. I'm going to say 6-25.
