Since Bluesky picked up millions of users last year, I have neglected Mastodon somewhat. This year, I'm going to make an effort to post and interact more on here too
I'm Matt, a security reporter based in Europe at WIRED. I'm often covering cybercrime, privacy, surveillance internet freedom, and more.

@clemens My take at least is something like that Signal, yes, is out of the US; but it's designed such that *this fact is largely inconsequential*. Strong end-to-end encryption without plaintext fallback, reproducible builds, source code available for review and heavily scrutinized by a large variety of people. Yes they do gain access to (fairly minimal) metadata, but so do pretty much all alternatives which are *much* less thorough in their security and privacy stance.
@mkj @clemens I think I agree with mkj here. I think it's hard to overlook Signal being the gold standard and their public position—and leadership—have always been very consistent on what they are building and not building (no desire to integrate AI, etc). They've threatened to leave countries that have proposed to compromise encryption and I don't have any doubt they would take the hard step if required.

Well this sucks. We had the social media account for our podcast on horrorhub.club which appears to have shut down. I don't think we have a way to transfer any information and I guess we need to find an instance.

In the countryside, there are rituals that have endured for hundreds of years, unchanged.
This elderly woman, her body bent by time and hard work, walks each day to meet her chickens - who roam freely across a vast open space.
She gathers a few branches and leaves, then returns to fetch the food she’ll give them, to complement what they’ve already foraged in nature.The chickens, friendly and orderly, follow her all the while.
And watching them, I’m reminded of people who are no longer here - people who were part of my life for a long time, who lived those same rituals, even if hundreds of kilometers away.Even as everything around us changes, there are places that never do.
