@Jorsh @lcamtuf it might not be. Mandelbrot started adding the B. as a middle name but said it didn't meant anything. (so maybe he had that joke in mind)

@vikxin The bit about the circumflex is easily explained. His family was Lithuanian, and he was born in Poland. They were not originally French. While Lithuanian and Polish orthography have numerous diacritics, the circumflex is not among them. It would be unlikely to be used in anyone's name, even if it was of foreign origin. This happens with French names used as English given names, too: Éric > Eric, François > Francis, Théodore > Theodore, Frédéric > Frederic, etc.
