  • You're paying AI companies a monthly subscription fee to be fingerprinted like a parolee.

I got bored and ran uBlock across Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini simultaneously.

    Claude:

    • Six parallel telemetry pipelines.
    • A tracking GIF with 40 browser fingerprint data points baked into the URL, routed through a CDN proxy alias specifically to make it harder to block.
    • Intercom running a persistent WebSocket whether you use it or not.
    • Honeycomb distributed tracing on a chat UI because apparently your conversation needs the same observability stack as a payments microservice.

    ChatGPT:

    • proxies telemetry through their own backend to hide the Datadog destination URL from blockers.
    • uBlock had to deploy scriptlet injection — actual JS injected into the page to intercept fetch() at the API level — because a network rule wasn't enough.
    • Also ships your usage data to Google Analytics. OpenAI. To Google. You cannot make this up.
    • Also runs a proof-of-work challenge before you're allowed to type anything.

    Gemini:

    • play.google.com/log getting hammered with your full session behavior, authenticated with three SAPISIDHASH token variants, piped directly into the Google identity supergraph that correlates everything you've ever done across every Google product since 2004.
    • Also creates a Web App Activity record in your Google account timeline. Also has "ads" in one of the telemetry endpoint subdomains.

When uBlock blocks Gemini's requests, the JS exceptions bubble up and Gemini dutifully tries to POST the error details back to Google. uBlock blocks that too. The error messages contain the internal codenames for every upsell popup that failed to load.

    KETCHUP_DISCOVERY_CARD.
    MUSTARD_DISCOVERY_CARD.
    MAYO_DISCOVERY_CARD.

Google named their subscription upsell popups after condiments and I found out because their error handler snitched on them.

All three of these products cost money.
One of them is also running ad infrastructure.

@siklist pihole can block requests by fqdn, but as you’ll notice, a lot of the third-party tracking infra was being proxied through other non-tracking infra to get around this. If Claude code is somehow loading in JS artifacts (idk if it can or not) it could bypass pihole.

    > Also ships your usage data to Google Analytics. OpenAI. To Google. You cannot make this up.

I was working on an internal analytics dashboard at some other Very Large Company What Competes With Google and someone pushed a change to fetch and run an analytics package directly from Google servers. I had to spend almost a week ripping out their changes and redoing the analytics using a lib that wasn't directly sourced from our primary competition (also I'm pretty sure the way it was used violated it's license).

So yea my lack of surprise is palpable.

@sergiodomeyko every time you open one of these AI chat websites, before you type a single word, the website is secretly making hundreds of connections to other companies’ servers in the background.

those connections are sending those companies information about you — what browser you use, what computer you have, your screen size, your timezone, sometimes a unique digital fingerprint that can identify you specifically.

you’re paying a monthly subscription for these AI tools, and they’re ALSO selling information about how you use them to analytics companies, ad companies, and in Google’s case, adding it to the giant file they already have on you from Gmail, Search, Maps, and everything else.

uBlock Origin is a free browser extension that blocks all of this. it’s like a bouncer for your browser. Lmk if you want some help installing it :)

hope that helps. welcome to the modern internet - it’s a mess out here.

  • @cloud @k3ym0 @OlivierBurnier @ublockorigin

Huh, free-online Mistral handles COBOL requests better than free-online Claude. At least the code is complete and compiles.

@pocketvj I've liked Friendica for that purpose so far. Of the various Fedi options I have tried it is closest in functionality. It lets you have granular control of who can see or interact with your posts, lets you organize your contacts, can make long posts if you want of like 200k characters, supports making groups, also has a nice rss feature where you can add rss feeds as if they were a contact so they show up in your timeline and can be easily reshared.Features it has that are better than facebook are: no ads, no algorithm randomly hiding your friends posts, can be self hosted so you control the moderation (no more random post going missing for reasons you cant figure out), can organize your timeline by subject matter in addition to by who's posting (you can create and organize saved filters by keywords and hashtags and other parameters to create multiple kinds of timelines), has an option to pick from different UI styles (there's a green style one that I love, it's so peaceful and relaxing), and ability to bridge to follow and post with people other social networks too, even ones beyond ActivityPub. And my favorite: an optional anti doomscrolling feature, you can choose "pagination" instead of infinite scroll.Differences anddisadvantages: At first your timelines are quiet until you start following more people because there's no Meta force injecting "suggested posts" at you constantly. Timeline may also be more quiet than you're used to because it doesnt have addictive UI tricks to keep people scrolling 24/7 (but if you struggle with addiction this is a benefit. I regained hours of my week back). Because it's built by volunteers the default UI isnt as slick. I recommend going in the display settings and using the "bookface" display option which makes it more close to how facebook looks. It lets you control more stuff than Meta does, and some people get intimidated by having so many settings options. Because it's not an invasive privacy predator, it's slightly harder to just look up people you know, no one is required to use a real name, so I recommend joining with a few other folks you know so you can hang out together as you start off.

Have you ever wanted to have Theo de Raadt give you his fortune in your GNU Emacs session? I made a package some time ago which serves exactly this purpose. You can find the package, as well as it's history on Codeberg with the following link. It is currently my only Emacs package, but I plan to make more when it becomes useful to.https://codeberg.org/amadaluzia/theo.elAppending to the history after the package was published onto Codeberg, I ended up in a call where me and @izder456 were talking about theo.el. I believe in that call, it was also reposted in the OpenBSD room on Matrix. I also remember being suggested to put it on MELPA, so that is exactly what I did. After creating the pull request and fixing all of the issues that stopped it from being pushed into MELPA, it couldn't make it on as it was a pretty repetitive package, and there were about 5 other `fortune`-esque packages with much more customisability. However, I now have a better package because of MELPA's guidelines, and I believe that I can still give attention to the package, even if not through MELPA.That's why I wanted to talk about it here, because maybe you are interested in having a fortune package for your GNU Emacs. If so, and assuming you have straight.el, you can simply copy the following snippet into your init.el. After that, you should have it installed.https://gist.github.com/amadaluzia/be96e325326a9d66619543af410e4bf4Let me know how the package goes for you. I would love to improve the GNU Emacs ecosystem further, as a GNU Emacs user.#opensource #foss #emacs #openbsd #bsd #runbsd
