I've been building an RSS reader for the past year. No unread counts, no inbox to clear. Just a river that flows at its own pace.
Today it's live on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. I wrote about everything that went into it.
@tg Instant buy! I appreciate the Miniflux support! I’d love an option to show feed favicons in River so I can quickly and visually discern which feed an article came from.

@tg This sounds really interesting, but I wasn’t sure about switching readers … then I saw it supports Feedbin, which is what I already use. Okay, sold.

@tg this is delightful! I’m enjoying reading all your decisions and rationale, and look forward to trying it out.
One thing I wonder if you have thoughts about: Why is so much of the interface at the top of the screen? In the era of Tall Phones, I find myself increasingly resentful of ever having to reach all the way up. Especially for common actions like back and close. Have you considered putting the Currents at the bottom of the screen? I intuit that I’d use them more naturally that way! 😄
@splendorr I played around with this a /lot/ and it just could not get it to feel right. I'll keep tinkering and hopefully figure it out and then offer a toggle in settings to let you pick where things go.

@tg This reader looks beautiful, and the concept sounds well thought out. Though I’m not sure it would work for me. Some sort of demo mode before purchase would be welcomed.
@jxrxme i'd have to make it free with an in app purchase and that has /always/ felt like a bait and switch to me. I'll look into other possibilities ...

@tg oh, sweet! we've been having problems trying to find a good podcatcher for us, especially one that's on, y'know, everything.
a note for that: i do love seeing show notes (i listen to friends at the table, an actual play that writes connected fiction in the show notes frequently), so sort of option to surface them easily/by default would be neat :3

@katzenberger Fair enough, I'm not arguing against that. It's just that encryption isn't easy and will take a long time. I'm using this as a 'research foil' to understand why people use Signal vs encrypted Mastodon PMs.
I totally get that people just want safety baked into everything, I'm not against that in any way. But it is very hard to do well.

@scottjenson Don't really need encryption just for the DM edge-case. I only need to know where/for who exactly my message will pop up automatically, though.
Suggesting "encryption" exists in mastodon, how can one make sure it is interoperable with ActivityPub AND nobody gets it wrong and falsely assumes encryption is omnipresent, when it is absolutely not.
