We never used the term "cake batter" when I was a kid, we said "cake mix."

@jshawthorne @cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus they can deep fry *anything*.
@Colman @jshawthorne @cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus you wouldn't batter a car...
-
@cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus I always thought that the deep frying everything thing was a slander of the Scots by the English. I was set to rights when I ordered a mini pizza when waiting for the ferry to Skye (so quite a while ago). While I was wondering where the pizza oven was they took a mini pizza out of the freezer, dipped it in batter and deep fried it. The Italian in me was were horrified and the best word for my experience was “interesting”.
@bjn @cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus deep fried pizza is one of the few things i miss as a vegan now - however i find it wrong to batter it, the first time i seen that i was shocked, i grew up on non battered deep fried pizza

@ProphetsCross @jshawthorne @cstross God, I love Scotland. I would die of Cardiovascular disease before my fifties, but I love it.
@Illuminatus @ProphetsCross @cstross Silly Wizard had a whole spiel about this in like the 80s about how Scotland was the last place on earth where fried food and smoking were good for you.

@delila @Colman @cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus What I'm gathering from this conversation is that the Scottish would, indeed, batter and deep fry a car.

@fesshole @Illuminatus @cstross Battered Tablet
(after a quick search for the name)
@patterfloof high quality healthy food.
-
@_thegeoff @fesshole @Illuminatus Chippie up the road from me does the notorious Deep Fried Battered Mars Bar (with salt'n'sauce). I have never dared.
@cstross my local chippie (Scottish, but not in Scotland) does deep-fried jam sandwich. It is surprisingly tasty.

We never used the term "cake batter" when I was a kid, we said "cake mix." When I first heard cake batter, in my early 20s, I assumed someone took a slice of cake, dipped it in batter and deep fried it. As I'm Scottish I don't think this is completely unreasonable.
@fesshole if I had socialized medicine I would try this

@kitten_tech @fesshole "cake batter" implies the existence of "cake bowler" and "cake fielders"
@dan @kitten_tech @fesshole I am now expecting someone to set up an array of cake-mix boxes in the matter of a game of cricket (complete with cake umpires).

@nxskok @cstross @_thegeoff @fesshole @Illuminatus my mum made these for us when we were kids (late 70s early 80s) we called them “jam butty fritters”
-
@cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus Thing is, the major health hazard there is the Mars Bar, the deep-frying only adds a little fat and complex carb to the outrageous amount of sugar. If you've not got any blood-sugar issues try one, just the once, worth it.
@_thegeoff @cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus maybe substitute a snickers. Peanuts make it healthy.
-
@jshawthorne @cstross @fesshole You can. The best part of it is that I am Spanish and the first time I found haggis deep fried it was automatically compared to deep fried morcilla de Burgos.
Ed.: morcilla is equivalent to black sausage; the morcilla de Burgos is a variety with cooked rice in the mix.
@Illuminatus @jshawthorne @cstross @fesshole oooooh i thought that was a portorro thing, la morcilla de arroz. my ACAB grandfather was 2nd generation español, so my grandma cooked a lot of stuff that was more Ethpanya than el Caribe.

@jshawthorne @cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus @Colman including ice cream

I have to break it to you that it was Italians who introduced the deep fried pizza to Scotland.Post WW2 a vast number of "cafes" (actually chippies) in Scotland were opened by Italians; these added deep fried pizza to the traditional fish, chicken, sausage, puddings, haggis, etc. Until the 90s the pizzas weren't usually battered, making the bread itself crispy.
The main question to immigrants to Scotland is "what in your cuisine can be deep fried?" 😉

@fesshole I would not be surprised is this is actually quite good

@cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus @bjn My wife is Italian. For some reason, I suspect she is going to love the idea.
