@Illuminatus @HighlandLawyer @cstross Deep frying is a thing in italian cooking, arancini is more or less deep fried left over risotto, but some things should be scared!
@Illuminatus @cstross @bjn
Not sure if you meant scared or sacred, but both work. -
@hosford42 @cstross @fesshole @bjn I mean, it gets crunchy.
@cstross @fesshole @bjn @Illuminatus I'm all in for crunch. (If only I could have carbs...) But I think it's the fat she'll appreciate. lol I'm almost vegetarian in my food preferences, while she's all about meat, cheese, and fried things.

We never used the term "cake batter" when I was a kid, we said "cake mix." When I first heard cake batter, in my early 20s, I assumed someone took a slice of cake, dipped it in batter and deep fried it. As I'm Scottish I don't think this is completely unreasonable.
Batter dipped, deep fried cake sounds like something one might find at a rural county fair in the U.S.. Served on a stick and covered in chocolate syrup.
It also sound delicious.

@fesshole I'd never heard of 'cake batter' as a term until I read this post.

@delila @cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus My toes are curling. Thatโs even worse.
@bjn @cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus straight from the freezer and into the hot oil - served with a portion of chips - but with the batter i imagine it being very stodgy

@Illuminatus @jshawthorne @cstross @fesshole oooooh i thought that was a portorro thing, la morcilla de arroz. my ACAB grandfather was 2nd generation espaรฑol, so my grandma cooked a lot of stuff that was more Ethpanya than el Caribe.
@Illuminatus @jshawthorne @cstross @fesshole @blogdiva
I saw a post once years ago saying "ACAB is Assigned Cop At Birth" and I don't know why this comment is the one that made me laugh at it again

@fesshole I guess that would be โbattery.โ
So then wait, are you saying your cake isnโt fully charged? ๐ชซ -

@fesshole When I was growing up, "cake mix" is what you added things to (water, maybe eggs, etc.) in order to make "cake batter" which was then poured into the "cake pan" to make "cake".

I have to break it to you that it was Italians who introduced the deep fried pizza to Scotland.Post WW2 a vast number of "cafes" (actually chippies) in Scotland were opened by Italians; these added deep fried pizza to the traditional fish, chicken, sausage, puddings, haggis, etc. Until the 90s the pizzas weren't usually battered, making the bread itself crispy.
The main question to immigrants to Scotland is "what in your cuisine can be deep fried?" ๐
@HighlandLawyer @cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus @bjn three pals of mine married into established Italian families in Edinburgh during the 90s. Two of the couples got set up with new cafรฉs/chippies as their wedding presents - apparently it is (or was) the done thing and all the extended relatives chip in to fund it. One of them told me that basically every single Edinburgh chippie belonged to one extended Italian family or another.

@jbenjamint @HighlandLawyer @fesshole @Illuminatus @bjn Yup, and they had some kind of ongoing name war happening: there was this one chippie out west called "The Codfather" โฆ

@nxskok @cstross @_thegeoff @fesshole @Illuminatus my mum made these for us when we were kids (late 70s early 80s) we called them โjam butty frittersโ
@finitebaffle @nxskok @cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus I was introduced to the Bread Pakora by @Theorem_Poem. Bog standard bread (UK white, naan, whatever), good sprinkling of garam masala, gram flour batter, deep fry. Really good.
