I'm listening to the Search Engine episode that birthed the #forkiverse, and I have questions. I'm morbidly curious about the server's configuration, since they handed that over to an AI that apparently neglected to configure them for SSL. But mostly I wonder how long their funding will last, since they're expensing it to their publisher.
Maybe that all gets cleared up later in the episode.

Maybe more critically, what's their federation policy? Do they have a clear idea of how bad it can get out there if you're not diligent about blocking malicious servers?

I don't want to blow the potential issues out of proportion. All new instances face unexpected challenges, particularly if their admins are also finding their way around the fediverse. The forkiverse has brought 2k new people onto the network, and it would be a shame to lose them just because the operators or their employer decided that the experiment was no longer worth funding.

@caseynewton @mastodonmigration Which is fine, if everyone involved in your experiment knows that it's an experiment and that it might not be around forever. If they don't, it's another matter.
Looking at https://theforkiverse.com/about , which is where people who want to create an account will go, there's no indication that this is 'running an experiment' and that their new home on the fedi might not be around forever.

@caseynewton @mastodonmigration Speaking as someone who's experienced a stovetop pan fire... wet blanket energy is good actually, in certain circumstances... burning vegetable oil in your kitchen is not sustainable in the medium term

If the answer is 'no', that's fine! As long as everyone involved knows that. It's not a trick question and it's not meant to discourage you, or anyone, from experimenting.
Responding to that question by having a little strop is a very clear indication that you're just like every other privileged white guy techbro in that you don't want to have to think about consequences.

Anyway, since I am, for some reason 🧐, no longer feeling particularly generous about it, I'll point out that there are literally thousands of experienced admins, as well as some highly credentialed tech researchers, they could have talked to about the process of setting up a fediverse server, which seems like a pretty basic way to go about journalism, and instead they asked Claude AI how to do it.

@Zambunny Io li uso entrambi e non sono sovrapponibili al 100%: per me il prodotto Proton irrinunciabile è la VPN, che infomaniak non offre. Mail e Drive sono sovrapponibili, con i prodotti Proton MOLTO più rifiniti, ma su Drive Infomaniak offre una suite completa di collaborazione su documenti, Proton solo testi e fogli di calcolo. kMeet e kChat di Infomaniak non hanno corrispettivi lato Proton. Entrambe le suite offrono poi strumentini comodi misti, io adoro Pass e Authenticator di Proton, e SwissTransfer di Infomaniak. Ultima cosa: Proton costa un botto di più di Infomaniak.
