I self-host a lot of stuff. Nearly everything that I use. FOSS and self-hosting is a massive part of my computing experience.
I love reading about people enjoying / exploring self-hosting stuff.
I struggle when people advocate "just self-host it", without giving due consideration to the costs, risks, security considerations, and so on.
I know that I've posted this a few times now, but this discussion seems to pop up quite a lot. So:

@neil Maybe it's not that deep, but here's a though: "self-hosting" is a concept rooted in capitalist thinking.
Let's get over the idea that corpo platforms are the only form of collective hosting and every man for himself is the one and only alternative.
Host stuff for your family, your friends, maybe even your neighbourhood. Don't "self"-host, community-host. Build systems together and help one another.

@darkwiiplayer I don't really understand the linkage of self-hosting and capitalism, but I agree the collective hosting has its attractions.
It also has its downsides, in terms of responsibility for security of other people's stuff, uptime / resiliency, and so on. And - potentially, if one cares - legal compliance stuff.
It's one thing, IMHO, to look after one's own systems, and quite another to do so for other people.

@neil The sort of mentality that every consumer purchases goods for their own consumption is just a very specific idea to capitalism.
When it comes to hosting, that translates into this idea that every user should, with their own money, pay for their own hosting, and either set it up themselves or pay someone to do it.
I just don't think that's a good default. IMHO the default should be that one person needs a thing, so they host it, then share it with others who may also have a use for it.
Same concept as communal fridges and such.

The true capitalist thinking is that nobody has mentioned co-operation (sorry, New Yorker). People should pool their resources to provide services they need. Not just money, but also skills and other things. Someone may be able to provide necessary server hardware while another can provide a place for hosting that hardware.
