A teenager asked me for recommendations to get into science fiction.

  • I don't think the fact that LLMs make mistakes is a reason to not use them. It is a good reason to get reference links, and to cross-check any output.

  • I don't use the term "stealing" for ideas, and I don't think it applies for LLM output.

I think that training LLMs on content to produce a model, then using that model to generate new content, is more akin to human learning than to verbatim copying.

I don't think that LLM output is a "derivative work" of the training data.

  • I don't agree with many of the arguments against LLMs I see on the Fediverse.

LLM usage is not a GHG-intensive activity, especially compared to other everyday activities.

  • @evan my employer will pay for pretty much any tools one can think of and yeah. for a quick "hey should this fail and panic!() and crash everything according to the docs" llms are (mostly) great
not so great when the thing i'm trying to do is niche and/or specific to the [in-house] libraries we use, but considering the main offender is mostly a thin api wrapper around an opensource c thing it manages more or less fine

would i want the whole "ai" industry to go up in flames without any hope for recovery? yeah
am i gonna take everything my BigTechCorpInc. employer will give me? also yeah

tho now that i think about it, maybe i could ask them for a 128gb ram mac mini or smth as a one-time purchase as an ollama server instead of the subscriptions

  • @evan I guess I feel guilty about it. I agree with the comment; it's automated stack exchange, I did set up some local models a while back, need to revisit that, specially since newer ones are probably better.

Edit: I've had lots of wonderful people impart their knowledge and spark curiosity about science. This is all still very new to me but we're learning and that's good! Hello chemists and physicists of Mastodon! In my next assignment I have to create a 3D image of a molecule (which I've done) and then I have to label this molecule where we might find H-bonding and London forces. Just one example of each.I think I understand H-bonding, but when it came to studying London forces I just hoped it wouldn't come up.Well. It has.I don't understand London forces at all so I have no idea how to even attempt to label a bond as a London force or not. Is it not all of the bonds? At the moment I just have to randomly guess...#AskFedi #Chemistry #Physics

@PaulaToThePeople totally agreeI worked on dairy bacterial tests for a couple of years and collected samples from dairies all over. The recent article on a baby that 'may' have died because of a glass of raw milk the mother drank is such a sad joke. If people were generally aware of the insane load of these pathogens like listeria that are allowed in US milk and probably everywhere else it would kill the milk industry. Most of the contamination is coming from growth in the lines of the machines they use to pasturize or sterilize which are difficult to clean. Killing the dairy industry would be a great contribution to lowering carbon polution since dairy cows are largely kept inside many industrial countries and the petrol used to raise their grain, keep them clean, mulch their manure and dead, and harvest the milk is outrageous compared to the food value.

#AskFedi: Long shot, but: anyone have an old Trust Soundforce1200 speaker set? The ~2000 era beige boxes with the wooden subwoofer. It doesn't need to function perfectly or even necessarily be complete. I need replacement parts for mine...(Yes I know it's old, no I haven't found any speaker set that can replace it to my standards, no anything Logitech isn't an option. If you know this specific speaker set and the unique sound it produces, and have a recommendation for a suitable modern replacement, it would be very welcome though! But no generic purchasing recommendations please.)
