Hi #fediverse.
-
note: the question is not "have your rich parents paid 50.000 of your local currency on gloriously expensive horse lessons and then you went on a skiing holiday". The question is: "have you sat on a horse".
Mini-horse = horse
Pony = horse
Cow = not horse, wrong thread.
And yes, as many people point out: that school-trip to an inner-city petting school where all six yr olds sat on Alfiiiii!! the sturdy mini-horse = yes, I've sat on a horse.
edit: Macro-horse = horse

Hi #fediverse. We need to talk about something.
While talking to a colleague about how I recently learned most people have never sat on a cow it came up that she has never sat on a horse. Like, not even once during childhood.
Another colleague admitted they also have never sat on a horse.
My hypothesis is that most people have at one point in their life sat on a horse.

Once was riding a trail the other time, or times, were carnival rides with ponies or horses hitched to a large rotating turnstile

@Pepijn A reap horse, too. Not a wooden merry-go-round one.

@Pepijn this makes a lot more sense to me than the cow one because horses can be trained to let people sit on them, even if the humans have no idea what they're doing. I've done a couple short riding excursions like that but I don't actually know how to ride at all--I still had fun, though!
-
@Pepijn no, because they're creepy things with blackened eyes and the power to shatter pelvises.
@gsuberland @Pepijn Traumatic fwaggle lore: I grew up around horses, to the point where I resented them as a teenager. My folks were hard up, but extended family had horses and everything we did fucking revolved around them, I hated them.
As soon as I was independent to stay home I wanted nothing to do with horses, but they talked me into one more ride in my late teens.
And that's how the last horse I sat on died while I was sat on it, and I took that as a sign.

@Chancerubbage @Pepijn I look ridiculous on horseback. So I try to avoid it. 😁

I don’t think my balls had dropped yet in either situation, so to speak, so I probably wasn’t worried about impressing the girls or not.

@Pepijn I have in fact ridden a horse several times, not just sat on it. first in 1992, then in 94, and finally in 99, the elephant was in 94, and the dog was in 96.. Forgive me I'M autistic, with an almost adedic memory.

@Pepijn I only picked "yes", because "probably" – as there's evidence I once sat on an elephant (for a minute, in a circus, backstage), I just can't imagine, that I never sat on a horse.
But, other than at the elephant, I don't have any memory of sitting on a horse. So, yes; but with a lump of salt

@Pepijn i never sat on a cow but i have petted and attempted to milk a cow. i say attempted because i was young and i couldnt get the hand motion right and probably didnt have the grip strength. have sat on a horse a couple of times at day care for pictures and i feel like at either a renn faire or girl scout camp of some kind where they led us around in a circle lol

@solitha @Pepijn Wealth is comparative. Not criticising but people who've never missed a meal may not regard food security as wealth. Someone whose family relies on foodbanks for food, or who has to go from one casual job to the next, may see the idea of a holiday as unachievable.
Getting to Scouts or Girl Guides may be a luxury. I tried to get that for my own kid but local groups have closed down (not enough volunteers) and transport time and costs were too much for groups in nearby city. My kid's aged out now and has no interst in horses anyway.
It may be luck as much as wealth too. My cousins weren't wealthier than me or my brother but they grew up in a rural area where riding horses was easy. Neighbours were farmers with a few horse for working livestock.
I learned to ride along with younger friends. My brother wasn't interested so he didn't bother.
@Kay I understand all that.
Of course we were better off than a family suffering from food insecurity or worse.
But "rich" is more of an objective term, an upper class tier.
Even considering it as comparative wealth, we were perhaps average or maybe a bit below in relation to the families of our time and city. Even without the many stables around, access to horses was not out of reach for most.
But the "where" and "when" most definitely matter, as you said.

@Pepijn It was lo these many years ago but, yes, I have sat on a horse at least once.

@solitha Some countries and regions don't have horses so riding them would be a pipe dream
