This article by @parisba is why #CommunityHosting and #SelfHosting need to be normalised. They are the only way we can stop scenarios like this happening:📰 https://hey.paris/posts/appleidYou might think this couldn't happen to you, but it could happen to anyone. It's especially scary as most big tech companies are in repressive countries. It's much easier and cheaper than you think to make your own online services. I've done a guide for non-technical people at https://growyourown.services#Activism

@justine @crisl_at Yes, I do. I've tested both SeaweedFS and Garage for the Mastodon media files - while migrating from Minio, I saw that Garage started to be extremely slow and use all my cpus after more or less 60 GB. SeaweedFS is much more tailored to this use case and it's fast and extremely light on CPU and other resources. The people developing Garage suggested me to re-test with a recent release as there have been some improvements but I haven't performed those tests, yet.At the moment, I'm happy with SeaweedFS and I'm using it both for the BSD Cafe and illumos Cafe instances.

Today's #FreeSoftwareAdvent is all about XMPP.Snikket (https://snikket.org/) is an easy-to-install, and easy-to-administer, XMPP server. It is designed for families and other small groups. The apps for Android and iOS (based on Conversations, I think) are great.Dino (https://dino.im/) is my desktop XMPP client of choice.Profanity (https://profanity-im.github.io/) is a terminal / console XMPP client, which is incredibly convenient. Why not have a fun festive project of setting up an XMPP-based chat server for you and your family and friends?#XMPP #FOSS #SelfHosting

@giacomo @informapirata @beachcomber @alephoto85 Snac2 is great. The only thing that got me back at hosting a full mastodon instance was because I wanted to use a mastodon mobile app fully. So it depend how you intend to use it :)But like I just said; a mastodon app. Snac2 is not Mastodon. It has, howerver, a "compatibility" mastodon API. It was just not enough for me personally. But beside that; Snac2 is really a game changer. Stable, reliable and low on memory/cpu usage.
