I'm VERY anti "Remote Learning" on snow days. Snow days are magical and young people should play video games and have snowball fights.
Or go sledding.
And pester their parents who are doing remote office work to make hot chocolate.

@futurebird There's essentially no such thing as "snow days" where I'm from. It's district policy to keep the schools open as much as possible (unless the weather conditions make it literally impossible for even staff to show up to schools, which never happened during the course of my school career). Parents do have the option to not send their kids to school if they choose to, though I don't recall many parents actually doing that unless they lived very far away from the school or something.

@futurebird When I was little, we created an entire snowman village on a snow day - all of the snowmen had names, families, and personal histories.

@futurebird What a remarkably obsolete concept. If they do not get a remote learning alternative they will be trying to extend the school year. And Parents will complain.

@futurebird 1000% if i have kids i would not force them to log in. they should play outside!

If they don't have a "remote learning day" then they need to tack an extra day on at the end of the year to make up for time.
I think that admins and posh parents who want to buy plane tickets early are behind all of this.
@futurebird where I grew up in Michigan they always budgeted snow days into the annual school schedule. If we ended up not using them, summer started a few days early

@futurebird one of the assignments my nephew had on monday, which was a snowday in some parts of Germany, was building a snowman.

@aeva @halcy yep, absolutely. compare to minecraft, whose larger part was done by just one person (hatsune miku), and so you get this systems driven open world game where all systems overlap interplay and relate to each other in a way only someone who doesn't have to coordinate dozens of teams could set up.

@lritter @halcy a fun thing about making massive worlds with hundreds of people working together in parallel is you have to favor modular designs that require less synchronization between teams, for the same reason you try to avoid it in parallel programs. I think that's why Nintendo abandoned the classic Zelda structure and the new Zelda's all have modular gameplay systems, for example.

@aeva @halcy in fact i think the primary reason to play a typical western AAA game is to experience a setpiece with detailed realism, and then only after that come the mechanics, how you actually spend your time there, and they feel kind of bolted on.
compare this to e.g. super mario 3d world, where being able to parse the scene quickly is crucial to a good experience, and so all visual design flows around this goal of enabling the mechanics.

@halcy imagine though trying to make, say, Call of Duty with Project Gold's digital painting tool. The results would probably look amazing tbh, but it wouldn't look like Call of Duty.
